D&D 5E [OOC] A Light Hearted Princes of Elemental Evil Hack and Slash

That's my understanding, too, Creamsteak. Sorry if I've been using the term "surprise round." My use is just a holdover from previous editions. I'll endeavor not to use that phrase anymore.

There's a lot of verbage that's hard not to use. I need to look in more detail at if the DMG goes into more about vision and the equivalent of line of sight. It's fairly significant with a giant shadow ball in the room.

I did attempt to double check all the damage rolls that have happened. I had one misunderstanding with Tolan's attack I noticed where I thought he double attacked but didn't roll it in Round 1. The way I'm tracking HP is to note it under the tokens on my excel spreadsheet. I "think" I've got everything right. I could be off still, but for the most part I think it's just a fair number of missed attack rolls.

Also, Tolan would have taken 19 damage if he didn't have that resistance. Kinda crazy. Good on him though.

So I'm thinking on the issues raised by Shayuri. One of those random sound-bytes I've subscribed to related to GMing is to build the right game for the group at the table today, right now, as things are.

I of course also have to include myself as a player in this math. I do want to keep a moderately high pace. The light-hearted in the original recruiting thread title was about the fact that if things don't exactly RP out correctly or whatever, I want to just roll with the punches. I also want it to be a bit more on the fun and silly side of RP to some degree to lighten the mood. And the "hack and slash" is mostly that I do in fact want to do a fair bit of combat for a PbP even though the medium isn't strong at that. I'm learning the rules, and honestly this game has already jumped me forward multiple real-life sessions in terms of knowledge, which is great.

This is actually the second set of decisions I've already had to consider related to compromising. The first was moving up to 6 player characters. I wanted to keep a small tight group, but this seems to be working fine. And I already had two people dedicated enough to read the thread, so I wanted to include them.

So I'll try to even out my pacing a bit with regards to jumping to the next scene. Now, I'm not 100% on how to do that. I have, in the past, let the players move the scene forward themselves and just waited for that. But I somewhat want to "push" still. What I will do is probably take advantage of the OOC thread for that and ask if people think we're ready to move on, rather than just deciding to move on myself in the IC thread.

Do people think that will help address the issue? I'm not actually sure if it does, but that's what I've arrived at so-far today.

I've sometimes posted in the IC or the OOC that I intend to forward the thread by X day and Y time (usually within twelve hours). That way, folks have notice that they need to post if they want to have input on the group's decision-making. It's not perfect--if a player is absent, they're absent, and no amount of my posting a deadline will change that. I like it though, because it's fair to those who are present, and at least gives those who skim notice that there's an expiration date on my calling for actions.

Also, I think you're doing a fine job. I know it's a lot more work on your part, but I really like that you've been giving map updates after each action or, in some cases, after two characters' actions. That's really helped me out a lot.

Whatever works for me. I'm enjoying the game and even the pace. It's pretty rare to have a lot of combat this quickly, but I do sympathize that the game was essentially billed as being "doable" if you could post at least once/day M-Th.

The new initiative works pretty well. I don't think it has really fixed the If/Then stuff. Or at least, changed the complexion of it so that if we put a plan together and then post it, we need to check to see if anyone else posted in the interim, then go back and change it if it isn't what our character would have actually done if they were witting to their companions actions. Not a big deal, but could be an annoyance if we don't have the time to edit.

I think fate is getting its revenge on Tolan

As I've mentioned before, I really enjoy the pace, even if it can be challenging (especially during the weekends ;-). I like Canadiennebacon's idea of a deadline to post actions before we change the scene, but I do think (and like) that at one point, you just have to push things through as a DM.
This will likely bite me in the butt: I'm travelling next week to Asia for work, so I'm curious to see if I'll be able to keep up. If I can, awesome, and if not, I'm fine with Thaliss skipping a few actions. It's part of the compromise of playing in a fast pace game. I also definitely feel you're doing a great job, and thank you very much for the extra work; the maps really help.
Cheers,

SG
