[OOC Discussion] A Call for Lovers (DM: jbear Judge??)

I guess it's not as clear as it once was. It all depends on how you interpret the flying rules.

"Fly Speed: To fly, a creature takes the walk, run, or charge action but uses its fly speed in place of its walking speed..."

You can clearly walk, run, and charge while flying.

"A creature that has a fly speed can also shift..."

And you can clearly shift

"...and take other move actions, as appropriate, while flying."

This last part is where it gets muddy. Crawl is clearly a move action, but what does "as appropriate" really mean? It could mean that you can use you fly speed to crawl while prone, since crawl is an appropriate move action while prone. But being prone doesn't just mean lying face down on the ground (as opposed to supine which is on the ground, but face up). It's also a state of being disoriented which is why you fall while climbing and flying and why you can knock prone creatures that lack legs or a clear body orientation.

Thus I tend to rule that you have to take a move action to "get your bearings" stand before you can move normally.

But I suppose what that really means is that being prone limits you to the crawl or stand move actions, but doesn't at all answer the question of whether you can use your fly speed to crawl.

"Falling Prone: If a creature is knocked prone while it is flying, it falls. This means a flying creature falls when it becomes unconscious or is subject to any other effect that knocks it prone. The creature isn’t actually prone until it lands and takes falling damage."

Again the rule says that you fall if knocked prone while flying, not are prone.

That being said, the power itself might not allow you to move while prone.

"Before the attack, you can fly 6 squares and must land in a square adjacent to your oath of enmity target. This movement does not provoke opportunity attacks."

The problem is that fly is not a defined game term. Flying and fly speed are defined, but not fly. If I were to reword this power I would word it as "Before the attack you can take a free action to shift 6 squares as though you had a fly speed. You must end this move on a surface that can support you and in a square adjacent to your oath of enmity target."

Also, land is not well defined. Can you land in a water square? Do you have to make an Atheltics check?

So I guess you'll have to ask jbear how this should work.

Okay, let´s simplify things. CFW was not here to use his PC properly. Hey may well have used Iaijutsu, even if that meant releasing the pole (which remains by the raft and easily accessible; this may change if the raft drifts away too far)

So, let's just say that SHandra shifted and drew when danger appeared. It fits characterwise.

Then she was smacked down and flung to where she is. But with sword in hand. She is now prone but armed.

I like the idea of popping a daily power that allows flight while on the ground, being awesome and landing on their feet to deliver a devastating attack. But ... I think there should be some challenge to pulling it off.

SO ... Acrobatics DC Hard: 20 and you can pull off exactly that.
Fail: -2 to attack but land on your feet
Fail by more than 5: -2 to attack and land Prone at Pixie's feet

Of course I imagine the fact I am letting her be armed basically solves the issue anyway, so she can stand and fly normally, right?
But for any future reference, that is how I would handle a situation like that.

GM: I think I'll call the combat there. The module says the water spouts fight til the death, but I think it makes more sense that they are linked to the pixie. Pixie down = Waterspouts down in my book. I was tempted to let Sabynha have a chance to do something before pulling it, but at a distance she would have to lose a dagger ... so:

COMBAT OVER! Congrats!

We should have a discussion about what exactly to do about CFW and Shandra in the OOC Thread. I think I prefer that if we are going to carry on with 3 players then two different players should NPC the 'extra' PCs rather than 1 person run 3 characters.

Other option: Fade Shandra out until if/when CFW reappears; level you up to the level you should be at after XP calculations and you tough out the rest of the module with 4 PCs.

I am open to other suggestions, so drop in a comment over in the OOC thread!

Hurrah! Saves us a few surges.

I've new job of my own next week, so yeah maybe Shandra should be faded out on the off chance CFW reappears (really hope that he does return as I've generally enjoyed gaming with him, but I thought he must have had less time to read through stuff before he left). You can wait until the next arc finishes maybe?

I've been seriously wondering if we should update Zuri's sheet on the wiki, but I'm not sure that there has been a precedent for that one!

Is there another possibility of someone out there wanting to join with another striker?

Yikes, I'd better go to bed, I've my own tabletop D&D 4e to run throughout the day tomorrow (player characters are pushing level 5, with 5 to 8 players at a time) !

Hey all, I'd like to participate in something if you guys are looking for another player. All my characters are too high level, but I could generate something fresh.

That would be awesome! Okay, as Neil has suggested we could bring you in at the end of this chapter (pretty close now).

If you want to make a 3rd level striker that would be great.

If you are able to come up with some way to justify your PCs arrival that would be great (however tenuous). Otherwise we can discuss via PM some possible options.

Cool, a 3rd level striker it is. I'll try to read the whole thread but if you can give me a quick-and-dirty summary of where the PCs are and what's going on it'll help me come up with something. Any suggestions are welcome.

Sure.

The PCs were sent on a diplomatic mission on belhalf of Count Varis to sort out a feud between the townsfolk and the elves of one of the important trade islands of the Crystal Isles. The heir (Juliana and Orlando) of each of the feuding sides had disappeared; each side blaming the other for this disappearance. The PCs discover that the two are lovers and have seeming fled to be together. They follow the clues to the Crystal Cave which turns out to be a gateway to an isolated island within the Feywild.

They discover that an evil witch named Soryth had kidnapped the lovers. The fey tried to stop the witch, interrupting a ritual designed to seize the power of the island. However this interruption has laid some sort of curse upon the fey who now feud amongst themselves. Juliana ran away only to to stolen by Soryth right from beneath the noses of the heroes. Now they search for Orlando who is meant to be safe on the island the group are rafting out to. They race to reach him before Ragnar's (one of the two feuding fey leaders) assassin reaches him. Ragnar decided that as Orlando was key to the witch's power, then ending his life would thwart the hag's plan.

Options for routes to join the adventure:

Count Varis has received word that the PCs have gone after the lovers. He has grown worried they have not sent word in such a long time and fears for their safety. He has sent you after them and you have entered the same way. The leprechaun's near the gate have captured you and bundled you up, and aken you as a prisoner to either Ragnar or the other fey leader Uma. This is where the PCs need to take Orlando once they find him.

The Ancient Fey that sent CFW's character are cut off from the island but grew anxious as they have also heard nothing from the warriors they sent (Ragnar and Uma). Shandra was sent by Uma's boss. You could have been sent to follow her by Ragnar's boss.

Or you could be completely independent, perhaps prisoner of some mad fey on the island, and a casual intorduction to the story through a brief side trek/interlude.
