D&D 5E [OOC] Uller's Out of the Abyss

Whops. I must have looked at second level spells by mistake.

So...goodberry and hunter's mark. I'll fix that in a bit.

Last question (hopefully). What will your typical spacing be from front rank to rear? In wider areas will you go 2 or 3 wide or stick to single file? If you are single file, 5' between each character that will be 75' from front to back. In wider areas going three abreast will shorten that to 25'...but that's pretty tightly packed...one AoE could be devastating. I'm expecting this group to travel in a bit of a gaggle. Not exactly a disciplined military unit...so I just need a general idear of the spacing places where you must travel single file as well as places where you can spread out.

Fixed the marching order....forgot Drum too...He's in the middle rank or strapped to Surana?

Yeah, if I can, I'd like to keep my mushroom buddy maybe tucked in my backpack (sticking out of the top so he's not miserable?). If I need to make room to do that, I'll ask Derendil to take some of the torches and whatnot from it.

If he can't fit inside it at all, I'll strap him to the backpack itself. Just want to be able to put him down easily.

ETA: Spacing...ugh. Feel sort of screwed here no matter what. Space out too far and we make room for possible bad actors in the party to find opportunities. People would also be easier for external enemies to snatch without anyone in the party noticing. Stay too close and we're conveniently lined up in "fireball formation."

I guess I have a slight preference for spacing out a bit and keeping it vaguely single file, but 5' sounds like a lot. Maybe 3'? What do you wise elves think? I'm just the dumb barbarian. :p

Yeah, you can rig something up to carry Drum.

I can tell you from RL experience that maintaining a gap less than 5' between 15 people (especially while people are trying to do things like navigating, foraging, etc) in poor lighting over uneven terrain would be nearly impossible. It's long enough that the traffic wave effect will start to be a factor, as you hit a spot where someone in front has to slow down, everyone will bunch up, then as the people in front move away from the congestion, the people in back will feel compelled to run to catch up (it really sucks being in back...). On a typical road march, an infantry squad (9 guys) will walk two abreast and cover an area about 120' long and 30' wide

So, I'd say 5' is probably the best you can do (realistically 10' is probably more practical, but we'll go with 5' for simplicity)

Huh, ok, that makes sense. File under "Today I learned..."

Guess my vote switches to 5' gap, single-file, and hope Orsik & Klep roll well.

Okay. I think I have enough to go on. Nothing really earth shattering is going to happen on day one anyway (at least not without some feedback and opportunity to adjust). I'm going to start resolving the first day's travel. Hopefully will have something posted soon (but no promises)

EDIT: Oh...and to make my life easier, I'm going to do the rolling in the background (with actual dice!). It will just speed things along.

they appear to be toadstools about 2 feet tall with alternating dark and light stripes

"The snozberries taste like snozberries."

We're on our way! :D

Sorry, been busy these last few days, so I didn't respond until now. Down with the plan and all, though; I thought we could walk in pairs whenever possible, so all in the main group have got someone to talk to (and see if they're up to no good).

No problem. I have a busy few days ahead so I wanted to get things moving for fear of getting delayed until next weekend.

I assume with this group of misfits you are likely travelling in a gaggle more thatn single file.

Edit: by group of misfits I mean the NPCs...not our fine collection of PbP RPers...[emoji12]

A couple of thoughts on the game at the moment...

1. I'm having a bit of a difficult time RPing angst. (If I was super into that, I'd be wearing a cloak and playing Vampire somewhere. :p) I came into OotA knowing it was not going to be a typical orc-slaying romp, so I knew vaguely what I was in for, but even so...it's a bit tougher than I thought it would be. I'm trying to get better at it, though.

2. Sorry if Surana seems a bit too attached to her little mushroom pal, and not tight enough with her fellow PCs. IMO, the bonds between the PCs should usually be stronger than those between any given PC and NPC. But A) the game has really just begun, so I'll be looking for opportunities to better befriend you elves, and B)

(Or, in this case, "You're a sentient mushroom!") Cute stuff just breaks my brain.
