Orb of Vengeance

I have loved the Orb of Storms ever since i first read about it. Then i got curious...48,000 gp is really expensive, and i was still willing to buy it for that much cause the other effects are pretty cool too, but it got me thinking how much an orb would be that JUST had storm of vengeance once per month on it like the orb of storms?

Please correct me on any of this if i'm wrong. All i had to go on was http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItem...gMagicItems.htm

so we have caster level x spell level x 2000 for an item of continuas or use activated item
17 (caster) x 9 (spell) x 2000 = 306 000

then the special is that it is only usuable every so often
reducing the price by (divide by [5 divided by charges per day])
meaning that 5 charges a day would leave it at that horrible price
one charge a day would make it 61 200

but this is where i start to do things that i'm not sure about... like the orb of storms has the vengeance once a month, which i assumed is once every 30 days

making the formula look like this 306000 / [5 / 0.0333] = 2040
.. wait... thats not right at all... ugh... well maybe it is seeing as its part of an item that can do two other spells.... one constantly without ending and another once per day
well maybe a better way would be once a week which ends up being
306000/35 = 8742gp

this method of creating items seems atad... broken... i think once a week is a little too often for a 9000gp item that does storm of vengeance.

your guys inputs or corrections! :P

To be fair, you can't just divide by 7 for once a week.
Why? because you could make seven of them and do it 7 times in one day!
That's added flexibility.

You know, just speaking personally? I'd take the Control Weather over the Storm of Vengeance power of the Orb in a heartbeat.

Storm of Vengeance is nice and all, but it's pretty much a combat spell. Properly used, Control Weather can destroy cities.

hmm... i guess, i was actually thinking of using storm of vengeance to destroy small towns that happened to cross me in some manner.

i didn't just divide the once/day one by seven, i still used the formula to divide 5 by 1/7 first... but it ends up being the same cost to buy a once per day as it is to buy 7 once/week ones.

so it seems the pricing is right, and i'm fairly sure no DM would allow you to buy 7 custom made wonderous items... or even know which one is used up adn which isn't in your backpack. Seems like it might take up a lot of space.

either way, i just wanted to know what you guys think appropriate pricing would be for an item that does just storm of vengeance, once a week. Or do you think that formula is accurate?

If you look at the cost of a single use scroll of Storm of Vengeance the cost is 3,825 in essence what you are creating is a scroll of Storm of Vengeance that can be used once a week without ever going away.

Thus it stands to reason that a different formula needs to be used for less 1/week and 1/month uses.

I agree -- the formula can be broken for anything except 1/day use. Personally I'd not allow custom items that aren't of the 1/day variety... but the, personally, I don't allow custom items that I don't create as the DM.

Well doing some forensics on the Orb of storms

1/day Control Weather Use activated should cost 36,400gp
Continuous Endure Elements should be 2000gp

Subtracting those costs from the base of 48,000gp you get the inference that 1/month storm of vengeance equivalent to 9,600 gp.

Assuming that there is no discount for multiple effects in a single item it stands to reason that 1/week storm of vengeance is some multiple of that value.

I'd use 4x as 28 days is relatively close to a month and gives a nice round number.

Thus you'd have 1/week storm of vengeance for 38,400gp

To bring it's cost down I'd strongly suggest making it charge limited either 50 charges would be 19200gp and 25 charges would bring the cost down to 9600gp

i forget where it is now but there is an increased cost for having multiple effects on the same item... i beleive it involved multiplying one of the effects by 1.5

Control weather is, essentially, the "kill an army" spell. The radius, especially if cast by a druid, is more than enough to cover small cities or large armies. While it can be dispelled if you actually cast it OVER an army, remember that armies almost invariably have to stop near streams or rivers. A few days of torrential rains will fairly easily drown an army well downstream from where it is cast.
