(OT) Any vegans out there?

When it comes to my diet, I like to eat more chicken and fish along with veggies and fruit. But I still like my grains and red meat. So I try to balance things out. My problem with some vegans is the fact that they try to push their ideas and beliefs on people. The rest, doesn't matter, it's their choice. Just remember to make sure your diet covers everything you need. On the literature that is out there, check out the facts on your own. Some of these authors have agendas all their own. Remember, humans can handle a diet that has meat in it, or not. Make the choice that fits you the best.

A bit, sure. But we have the intestines of an herbivore. For what it's worth.

Not much, since we don't have any provisions whatsoever for digesting cellulose, pretty much a necessity for any true herbivore...

That's what you think! I couldn't disagree more. Our local store doesn't stock them, they're really hard to run down and trap, and even if you CAN get ahold of one they never seem to fit onto the bbq grill without a lot of messy chopping. I'm afraid that eating vegan is a lot more work than I ever dreamed it would be.
I'd ignored this thread for a while, but got bored and decided to read it, because my wife is a vegan. But now, I have to say that after this comment, Piratecat is officially my hero.

Sure, we have pointy teeth, but compared to wolves' or lions', ours are small and stubby. We also have an array of flat molars for grinding plant fiber.

Yes, our overall design is omnivore. Humans are amazingly adaptable generalists, because we needed to be generalists. However, now we don't need to crack open a femur of a found carcass for its marrow for survival. Times change.

point well made. and since times have changed and my little canine beasties no longer need to crack open bones for survival i think it is time addie and pixie become vegan.

they may be a little upset though. i know my dogs. they are gonna pull out the 'but we are carnivores for love of doG' argument.

dogs will say the darndest things sometimes.:D

Yet, we can digest meat just fine. To the point I know a number of people who live on an almost exclusive diet of meat.

Funny how our herbivore intestines work...

Yup. IE, we are omnivores. Never debated that.

Yeah, times do change. We don't have to scrounge around in trees for leaves and berries now, or find roots and plants that aren't toxic... We've developed methods for mass-production of animal flesh, no longer having to rely on such primative methods as spears, and scavanging dead carcases.

I've been vegetarian for about 2 years now, and I'm somewhat lazy when it comes to cooking, so one of my favorite recipe book that I've found is "The Vegetarian 5-Ingredient Gourmet" by Nava Atlas. It contains 250 simple recipes -- all of which contain only 5 ingredients. Most recipes are vegan and for the ones which are not she describes alternate ways of veganizing them.

Also, one thing I missed after going veggie (btw for animal welfare reasons) was breakfast meats... I used to love bacon and sausage for breakfast. The best breakfast veggie meat that I've found is called GIMME LEAN by Lightlife. It ROCKS!! I like it better than I used to like real breakfast sausage. I also enjoy Lightlife's veggie country ham for quick and easy lunch sandwiches.

Anyway, just a couple tips from a somewhat lazy vegetarian.

Oh, and the PETA website has a list of good vegan cookbooks.

If you run into a Gelatinous Tofu Cube, use Burning Hands, slice and dice it, mix with vegetables, serves 400.

It's not. I've never found an artificial meat that truely replaces meat... Some aren't bad fixed certain ways, but they are never the same.
Linda McCartney Vegetarian sausages are actually quite jummy. But I've never had anything that had to resemble beef be better or approaching beef, or even be non-disgusting for that matter.
