(OT) Any vegans out there?

However, the same sources, as well as the behavious of our closest relatives, the chimpanzees

My closest relatives might leave a lot to be desired, but I resent them being characterized as chimps. I mean, how uncalled for is that? Sheesh.

Also, as was observed just this Saturday by one of the chaps in my gaming group: "If we weren't supposed to eat animals, they wouldn't be made out of meat."

Ha!

But seriously, folks, Perun has hit a nail on the head. A good Mediterranean cook book, et cetera, is the way to go.

Of course, my favorite dish at Fadi's Mediterranean Grill is the lamb shank. The meat is so tender and succulent it can be peeled off the bone with forefinger and thumb.

Krill, a nice healthy diet of krill only. I'm just going to swim the surface of the ocean with my mouth open.

mmmmmmm-kriiiiiilllllllll

Peanut butter and Jelly sandwiches
cereal with soy milk
salads.
You will need beans for I think protein and multivitamins to supplement what you are missing out on.

To bring it on topic

Ambrosia
Mana
Apples of Idunn

and you could try out:

Shriekers
Mushroom men
Shambling mound

Stay away from ochre jelly and black pudding, they are not edible.

In all seriousness, the book Eat, Drink and Be Merry by Dr. Dean Edell is a great read. It's all about eating healthy and living healthy... and not in the way most people think.

Hi, everyone. I'm switching to veganosity after reading Fast Food Nation. Does anyone know of really, really easy and good recipes for beginners? I live in San Diego, in the hippiest region, so soy-based products and organic food, etc, shouldn't be hard to come by. There's also a huge Japanese/Asian marketplace nearby, likely with healthier and less messed up foods, too. So, any suggestions? Thank you.

My advice would be to become vegetarian before vegan (unless you're already vegetarian.) It's a lot eaiser, both in dificulty of finding food as well as for getting nutrition.

Umbran: Yeah, a chage in one's diet does influence your friends choices. I've let all my friends know that they should chose what they'd normally chose to eat and I'll fend for myself. Everything works out pretty good except for two types of resaurants: barbeque and seafood. Almost every other place as an ok vegetarian option, except those two.

I've been a vegetarian for 6 years now and I can't digest meat anymore. I accidentily ate some pork 2 years ago and got massively, painfully, sick. Even with that a although i'm vegetarian for religious reasons, i don't "cheat" a bit on ocassion with soup stocks. But when I do, it's only because I don't want to be rude to someone's hospitality. I think hospitality is very important and that I'm not focused enough on my religion to put it before respecting another's kindnesses.

When my wife's grandmother found out I was a vegetarian she said, "How'd he get so fat only eating vegetables?" Hehehe, gotta love the bluntness of old chinese women... :)

hmmm.... humans are "supposed to" run around naked and squat in the grass whenever their bowels call to them... we don't. There are many reasons to choose a vegitarian, vegan, pestitarian (sp? veggi with fish) or other dietary choice. For SOME individuals, there are health reasons not to. Relax and let other people make their choices... Until they tell you "you're wrong for not doing this" you don't need to be defensive.

In terms of the "effects on social eating" aspect, I'm not so much concerned by it since I played in a group with one lactose intolerant individual, and one who was deathly allergic to soy. Once you get used to eating around medical restrictions, throwing in a vegan and a guy on the atkins diet is no biggie. ;)

As for recepies, there are two basic choices in going veggi/vegan - try to replace all the things you no longer eat with clever decoys, or just enjoy a varied diet of new foods. I find the later more enjoyable, but some of the clever decoys can be enjoyable on their own terms, too. (I have a friend who regularly eats veggie burgers, not because he's vegitarian, but they are easy to buy and prepare. Similarly, a good tofu curry is a nice switch for me once in a while.)

Please be aware of this....

Veganism is a religon and way of life birthed I believe in India and practiced by Hindus...it is not a "healthy eating plan". It is the belief in strong animal rights and non-exploitation.

A Vegan is a person who
* eats no meat, seafood, eggs or dairy
* avoids wearing clothes and accessories made from animals such as leather shoes
* tries not to use products derived from or tested on animals, such as Vegans also don't use honey, as this is taken from bees. That leaves out silk, alot of makeup products...etc.

So there's alot more to it than that.

Thanks!

Please be aware of this as well - while that may be the original philosophy, and/or core meaning of the word, veganism is also in our modern life a person who chooses to have an animal free diet. It can be for philosopical or health reasons. It can also include feelings about clothing, animal testing, etc, OR it can not.

If you are clarifing a definition and suggesting that someone who does not subscribe to all the associated philosophy use a different and more accurate term, thats all well and good. But if you are trying to tell the poster what motivations and behaviours he must have to be (little v) vegan, that isn't very polite, nor appropriate to this forum.

After working 9 years in the produce dept, and seeing how inhumane we treated the produce I fell bad eaing it.

As for the daily food requirments. Tacos. They are all the food groups wrapped in tasty bread like substance.

You got the bread gorup= The wrapping or shell
The vegetable group= Tomatoes, lettuce
You got dairy= The cheese mmmm Cheese
And I am missing one but I am sure its in there too.

I'm fairly sure most vegans (as it's being used in the context of this discussion) would be very surprised to hear they just converted to Hinduism without realizing it.

Please don't try to turn something into a religion to keep people from expressing an opinion about it, it's not a "belief system" and it's certainly not above criticism.
