Do vegans need to keep an eye on their iron intake as well?

Depends. If they're eating a varied diet rich in whole grains, legumes, and leafy greens, they should be fine. If they're getting most of their calories from potato chips and beer, they're in trouble.

Whole grains, leafy greens, and legumes are all great sources of iron. You actually find more anemia in the lacto-vegetarian circuits, since lactos often get most of their protein from dairy sources, and cow's milk is almost iron-free.

I don't know where the second hand smoke thing comes from. If you're up to it, start a thread in NKL, and I'll happily point out the one study that takes care of your argument quite handily. But not in this thread.

My turn!

My Fiance has been vegetarian for almost a year now, and I have been for nearly that long by default, since there is no meat in our house. We are healthy and never feel deprived.

The argument that meat is a requirement to a healthy diet is a fallacy. Look around and you'll see it for the bull-poo that it is.

For a powerful ethical treatment of why meat is wrong, try Animal Liberation by Peter Singer. What it all boils down to is that no matter how you cut it, animals raised and killed for us to eat suffer, and causing suffering to any other being is wrong. Intensive farm operations are brutal and concerned only with the bottom line and slaughterhouses (even used for religious purposes) are not quick and humane, despite the propaganda. So anyway, give it a read and see if you can refute him. Enough politics from me. :)

Now, if you want to eat vegetarian, I recommend the Moosewood Restaurant Cookbooks . They point you towards some fantastic recipes. We use our books all the time.

To get started, just try substituting in meat substitutes, like the hot dogs, burgers, sandwich slices, hamburger, etc. Into your normal eating routine. Work your way to whatever level you're comfortable with. Enjoy!

Second hand smoke? What the heck are you talking about? Unless somebody brought up smoked meat, that really doesn't belong in this thread.

I am sorry, I keep forgeting that sometimes everything needs to be spelled out in painful detail here. The Second Hand Smoke reference was to say that you cannot believe everything shoved in front of you by anyone else. And, if the woman at the site cannot show me a concrete report, I am sure nobody here can as well.

Hm. Considering how stongly Kahuna Burger seems to feel about animal treatment, I'll accept it as political, and not address it further.

As an aside, small note on netiquette -

It's perfectly acceptable to disagree.
It's perfectly acceptable to ask the source of somone else's statement.
It's perfectly acceptable to feel strongly enough about a topic to make it political for you, and to ask for others to cease discussion.

It's not so nice to claim you know from whence another's comment comes, declare it not to be a fact, and then state that it is politics. Intentionally or not, it is equivalent to calling someone else a liar, and then slapping a gag on them so they may not defend themselves.

I won't start another thread, because that was not the point of my initial statement, it was that people should look around. And secondly, you cannot point out any report to take care of my argument because, quite frankly, such a document does not exist. A false document, or one that has been altered, sure. I am not even a smoker and I don't see the harm caused to others. But that isn't the point of the thread, I apologize that people cannot make the connection between books and media in general and believing everything you read/see/hear.

Wake up, folks,

I note that your sig file contains a Scandinavian (?) language, so perhaps you're not fluent in English. Normally, "I apologize" doesn't precede an insult: normally, you apologize for insulting people as a sign that you regret having done so and won't repeat the behavior.

I won't address your point because it's inappropriate to this forum.

Ooookayy. This thread started off with a rather innocent-and neutral-request for vegan cooking tips. Seemed reasonable enough. Heck, I'm not a vegan but if I'd had any tips I would have posted 'em up (unfortunately I can't cook to save my life, so any advice I offer could be construed as cruel and unusual punishment. :p ). However, the posts have been veering swiftly away from the original thread topic. They've allready been dancing at the line of inflammatory, but the above-quoted post has gone right over that line IMO. I mean really, tossing out posts like that is just going to make this ugly. I'm gonna spare everyone my opinion on the subject, but I am gonna plead that we just keep it to some vegan recipies for the poor chap before we get the thread closed.

Thanks
