In other news I really like a nice tofu curry...

The trick to tofu, in my experience is that you have to simmer it. I used to hate tofu because it would just be flash fried with sauce on the outside but no taste to the tofu itself. So you make up the curry sauce (coconut milk, tomato paste, spices) and put the chopped up tofu in there right at the beginning. Simmer the tofu while you chop the onions, simmer the onions while you chop the peppers, simmer it all with occasional stirring.

The absolute best thing about curry, of any sort, btw is that it tastes BETTER after being refridgerated or frozen!

Another good wok/tofu thing is stir fry. Just mix soy sauce, seasame oil, rice wine vinegar and garlic to taste and let the tofu simmer in it turning occasionally. Then add in the veggies and whatever stir fry sauce you like.

My best tofu recipie is one of those "eyeball" ones, so I can't really give exact ingredients... It's really simple, though, that I fix for lunch alot when I'm in a hurry but still want a hot lunch.

Cut up s-h-i-t-a-k-e mushrooms into little chunks, onions into half-rings, and tofu into small cubes. Coat all of it with a mixture of soy sauce (The good stuff, if you can get it), mirin, and corn starch, then saute in a pan with a little vegetable oil (If your going vegan, anyhow... I just use whatever oil is handy).

Heh. nothing bugs me more than fake meat. if you're going so far as to eat tofurky, just give in to teh real thing.

Why? I lurve fake meat. Why not eat real meat? because real meat is dead animals. Given that I don't eat dead animals, i don't eat real meat. Givent hat I do eat plants that taste good, I eat fake meat. I mean where's the problem? East asian cuisine has spent a lot of time and energy on developing this and who am I (or more particularly the rest of you guys) to say that it's a bad idea?

I always liked the taste of meat, but not the method of getting it.

Anyway, tofu is yum. again, if you don't like it, good for you. I recomend freezing tofu and defrosting it as it absorbs flavours better and is nice and chewy.

The other tofu advice i have is to eat it first when it's cooked by someone who knows what they are doing. Most people I know who hate tofu hate it because they tried it after cookign it themselves with no idea. Go to a good chinese vegetarian restaurant or something similar and then you'll know what can be done with it.

And this is the crux of my problem. I hate the taste of meat. Having never grown accustomed to it, i dont want to eat it, even if it isnt meat. There is a vietnamese vegetarian restaurant near my house in san jose, where they cook all their food out of some soy product, and it all looks, tastes, and takes on the consistancy of meat. I ordered sweet and sour soup there, and nearly vomited when i swallowed some of their fake strips of beef. =)

I guess fake meat is only really good for people who gave up meat, but need a transitionary phase. Sort of like a patch or something.

Oh, and garden burgers and boca burgers are like disgusting hockey pucks to me. If thats what meat is supposed to taste like, no thanks =)

It's not. I've never found an artificial meat that truely replaces meat... Some aren't bad fixed certain ways, but they are never the same.

You don't follow a lot of the threads around here very closely, do you? You want to be tolerated here, it is best to not have any opinions at all. :D

And, because I love them, more desserts.

I don't think of veggie burgers as "fake meat". They're non meat burgers. So if you want to put something on a hamburger bun with ketchup and maybe cheese (or fake cheese as the case may be) and eat it in one hand with some french fries on the side, BUT you don't eat meat, you can have veggie burgers. Kinda like if you want to open a tall bottle of fizzy beverage and pour two nice looking glasses of light tasting bubbly for a nice dinner BUT you don't drink alcohol you can pick up a sparkling cider. Sparkling cider I'm sure tastes nothing like wine, and I doubt I'd want it to... but it holds a similar place in a meal which I sometimes want to emulate for feel...

See, I've had both types, non-meat burgers (like those ade with chickpeas and big chunks of pumpkin in them) and fake meat burgers (the ones that aim for a consistancy and taste similar to meat).

And my vote, perhaps unsurprisingly, goes for the fake meat type.

And Talinthas, I've been vegetarian for nigh on 10 years now. I just like the taste of fake meat, it's not a stepping stone.

shrug.
to each his/her own then =)
Obviously someone must find them appealing, else they wouldnt be on the market =)

For me though, i'm happy to go without.
