[OT] Best music to listen to when depressed

Paradise Lost, Switchblade Symphony, Per Somnia (mp3.com), Type o Negative, and Nine Inch Nails (well some of it is depressive, some of it is really angry, and most of the songs combine techno and rock).

DOH how could i forget.... The Smashing Pumpkins and thier album; 'The infinite sadness and Meloncoly'

Well, me still having some scraps of bipolar depression left, I have a large list of music to listen to while feeling like I want to press the large red button that blows the world into orbit around itself.

Current favorite is Assemblage 23. You may not like industrial dance, but I really love the lyrics (as well as the music). Especially to Disappoint and Let Me Be Your Armor.

Nothin' beats old hank Williams for true depression-wallowing. Try "Weary Blues From Waitin'" or "Lost Highway" or...well, all hank is good.

I also enjoy the Church's album "Starfish," particularly "Under The Milky Way."

Roxy Music is also good; songs like "In The Midnight Hour" or "These Foolish Things" or "Slave To Love" are good choices.

Steve Winwood's "Talking Back to the Night" or "Arc of a Diver," particularly the original, less-produced version of "Valerie" and the title track from "Arc."

Godley & Creme/10cc did some great music.

Dwight Yoakam's first album, "Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc." is one of the best country albums ever.

The Mavericks "What A Cryin' Shame" - especially the track "Pretend" - also do some great music for a down mood. "Music For All Occasions" is another good album by them.

Y'know Colonel, I've always known you had taste, but now you take the cake. Great list.

I highly suggest The Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, or anything by the Beatles. Cocteau Twins are a goodie too.

Be good.

Try Tori Amos. When I 'm sad (has been a while, though) I love to listen to Little Earthquakes. But you should be careful, there are some songs on this CD that might make it worse. But the most of them just allow you to live through your sadness with the music.

You need the Unknown Pleasure album by Joy Division. It's moody, post-punk out of the UK in the late 70s. You know singer Ian Curtis was serious, because they found him swinging from the end of a rope. Rest of the band went on to become New Order but that stuff never compared to Joy Division.

If you are angry and depressed, you need Damaged by Black Flag. Raging 80s hardcore, completely classic. The song What I See is great when you are pissed off.

I can recommend both Rites of Spring and Embrace for more from the gut hardcore, Rites of Spring especially. Both were DC bands in the mid-80s, pioneers of the so-called "emo" movement.

Bare Naked Ladies or They Might Be Giants never fail to bring a smile to my face for some reason.

For somber, I'd slap on The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway by Genesis. Everytime I listen to it, it brings a new adventure to my mind. Not sure why.

Be well! :)

Portishead is music for depressed people, Glory Box particulary is soooooo sad. Joy division is also a good choice. But if you want to get out you depresion try Happy hardcore or VNV nation :)

If you are depressed for a reason (read boy or girl) nothing beats Pretty Hate Machine with Nine Inch Nails. Ringfinger is a great song with a nice message in time such as those.

ringfinger
promise carved in stone
deeper than the sea
ringfinger
sever flesh and bone
and offer it to me
