[OT] Best music to listen to when depressed

try Creed's old CD, My Own Prison. Its got some religious overtones, but most of it is upbeat, in a "I was sad but now I'm Agressive and Antisocial" kind of way. Its just about the only thing I'm listening to these days.

Hehe

Tool's Lateralus CD is great. Its very moddy, but it usually leads back to an empowering message, so you can let out your feelings and decide to get past them.

Also, the most mellow song I know is this "Majestic Moods" instrumental of Scarborough Fair. That stuff's like audio morphine.

Well, for wallowing, I second the recommendations of Nick Cave, Tom Waits and Tori Amos. Tori Amos' "Boys For Pele" is probably one of the most depressing albums I own.

As for cheering up? I swear by Ozomatli and Soul Coughing. Oh, that Chef Boy-ar-Dee song always seems to put a smile on my face ;)

I would agree with the previous statement about Joy Division. Their stuff is probably most depressing music ever made. As pointed out, the lead singer hanged himself. Some of that carried over into the next incarnation of that band, New Order. I always thought the most depressing (and somewhat Cthulhu-esque) song was "Digital". "Isolation" comes close.

Stabbing Westward is pretty depressing too.

Aimee Mann can be depressing, to the point of being a bit whiney.

I always found Type O Negative to be a bit tongue in cheek, or campy.

(Also, to the previous poster that said Orbital was trance, it's not trance! <Shudder>. Orbital is techno! Techno techno techno! Halcyon + on + on is somewhat trancey, but that's it, AFAIK (that's also their only decent song, IMHO).)

Trance is more Paul Oakenfold, Tiesto, Ferry Corsten, Armin Van Buuren, Paul Van Dyk, though they tend to play more than just trance (especially PVD, though all his own stuff tends to be trance).

Sad trance songs:

Elan - Find Your Way (Van Gough Blissed Mix)
Pulser - Cloudwalking
Perpetuous Dreamer - Sounds of Goodbye
Jose Amnesia - Last Sunset in Ibiza
Havana - Totally Eclipsed
Schiller - Dreams of You (most his stuff is actually pretty depressing)
First Life - Burst into Fire (resurrection mix)
Sasha - Arkham Asylum

There's a lot more - I'm more into the happier stuff...

Uplifting trance songs:

Sureal - Take My Breath Away (& most other songs by Lange)
D-mention - Daydream
Tukan - Light a Rainbow
Lexicon 4 - Reach me
Orinoko - Island (Thrillseekers Remix)
Most stuff by the Space Brothers (and their dozen or so aliases)
Most stuff (or remixes, really) by Trouser Enthusiasts. They even manage to remix Joy Division's Love Will Tear Us Apart into something almost cheerful...

That's just off the top of my head, anyway...

not to be a nitpicker but i did mention nin first. :D

i will also second the joy division bit. any band whose voaclist went on to fulfill so many of the sorrowful emotions of his songs with suicide is worth listening to if you want to wallow in your depression.

in the event someone wants to get out of their turpor i would suggest some beck, frank zappa, sex pistols, oingo boingo, and rage against the machine.

a aggressive and antisocial christian band. the wild world we live in these days!

personally, I like listening to music with either lots of instruements, or something from a musical, that I can sing along with.

but stuff like enya can be cool....

enya - may it be
is a cool song

Great music listed here all around but you want to get out of a blue mood, listen to songs you've known since birth. For me it's the Beatles. Van Morrison is good too.

You want to ride the mood, go jazz, like Coltrane or maybe settle in for some deep meloncholia with Leonard Cohen.
