[OT] For those who want to stop the annoying "messenger pop ups" for GOOD!

Ruvion

First Post
I've just recently found out that Microsoft (a company ran by epic level rogues) had 'hidden' the ability to stop messenger pop ups built within your windows xp. Sure there are "cheap and free" or "pay-a-little" solutions out there that can stop the messenger pop ups; however, your windows (at least as far as Windows XP goes) has the function to shut it off without the hassle of taking up computer resources (and other conflicting problems...those who used messenger stoppers should know).

Follow the direction below to achieve cybernetic salvation and make sure you spread the good news to your friends and familiy and other strangers:

1. right click on My Computer and go to Manage
2. click on Services and Applications then select the Services sub heading.
3. locate Messenger then right click on it for Properties
4. click on Start Up Type then select Disable (the default setting should be 'Automatic')

There you go...you are now officially free of 'Evil Messengers and Messenger Stoppers' for life! :D

I just want to add my 2-coppers worth in defense of pop-ups. When the dot com market collapsed the wads of revenue previously paid by companies to post those banners and buttons that everyone ignored also dried up. A significant number of marketers were ready to stop using the internet altogether, which may sound good on the surface of things, but would have led to even higher costs for ISP's and users in the long run, as well as reduced the amount of content available. The creation and use of pop-ups helped to save that industry. So, while they may be annoying, they have served a very useful purpose these past two years.

...and I'm sure Telemarketing puts food in the bellies of children who would otherwie go hungry, but you know what?

I would rather they starve/charge me more for ISP.

I despise "Guerilla Advertising" and think that their isn't a Hell low enough for them.

I seem to spend a lot of my life being "advertised at" and it's getting to me

Trainz: the pop-up service doesn't exist on the Windows 98 OS. If you're getting pop-ups on W98, it's an external program that's generating them. Probably some kind of spyware; ad-aware (search for it on any search engine) might remove it.

Silver Moon: appearing without the need of user interaction (unlike web browser popups, which are tolerable, though barely so), and consuming your resources to do it, these popups are the ultimate in invasive advertisement and overall an Evil Thing. If any firm is basing their business model on these, I sincerely hope they go bust in the most destructive way possible.

Telemarketing, subliminal advertising, call it what you will, IT MUST STOP!

My next character will be an Epic Telemarketer Hunter.

Ways to stop telemarketers:
Tell them politely but firmly to take you off their call lists, and take down the company name. If they call again, sue their collective arses for $500 American for every time they call after that.

Tell the telemarketer that you see no point in buying their product, subscribing to their service, etc., whatever it is they're selling, because you plan on committing suicide after you hang up the phone. Unless, of course, they can talk you out of it.

Whoever developed spyware and adware should rot.

:D Ever try it?

I wonder what the suicide rate among telemarketers is...
