Women are a little deeper than that, and won't be 'brought in' just because there happens to be a lovestory as part of the movie.

I think Harlequin was commenting on Lucas's motivations as opposed to women's tastes and discernment. That said, I would actually pay good money to see AOTC if it was made as a chick flick. The sheer perversity of the idea appeals.

Sure, we might like to see some gals on screen, but they aren't required to be mooning over some git just to get our attention. Give us a little more credit, and give some to the men, too.

Oh, I think most people with functioning brains know that women are deeper than that. Those men (like myself) who are married and live with a woman full-time certainly know that.

But we are talking about Hollywood marketing guys here. They have no respect for the intelligence or depth of any of the movie going public, male or female. How many movies have been marketed to women in the last year with some variant of a lamely packaged tear jerker love story as the centerpiece and no substance whatever?

They hold the same low opinion of movie going men though, since they put out movies designed to appeal to men that are nothing more than random "action" like "Rollerball" and expect that men will go see them despite the fact that there is no apparent plot and no apprent other redeeming feature highlighted in their marketing.

KNEW Sly was on to something with Rambo II and III. Man, I can't wait for Rambo IV: Attack of the Bandannas!

Hong "IHBT IHL" Ooi

Don't joke. Sly is shopping around Rambo IV now and apparently the story has him going to Afganistan. But so far no studio will touch it.

Yeah, but -

Marketing gurus (read, Gorillas) aren't the issue here. The story is, and I don't think Lucas is sitting there thinking, OOH, this will bring in the chicks! :D

No one can deny that the relationship between Anakin and Amidala is a defining point and a vital part of Anakin's history, just as his mother's death will be. It just irks me that the love story gets dumped on because it's a love story, even though it's only part of the movie, while the equally important non-blowing-things-up emotional aspect of the movie, Anakin's mother's death, is not a big deal.

Just seems a very backwards, "Girls are icky! Love stuff? BLECH!" kind of reaction to a very important part of the plot line. :)

And after this immature reaction, they complain that it's too much oriented to kids... ;)

I don't mind a love story. I just don't want it to appear too cheesy or forced. Love is one of the forces behind Star Wars--it certainly factored into the story with Han, Lea, and Luke (although Luke's love was transformed from romantic to familial). So there's no reason to say that love doesn't belong in Star Wars. I just want it done well--or at least competently.

Well we won't know that until the movies actually out. Getting our panties & boxers in a bunch beforehand won't accomplish too much. :)

Very true, Ashtal. As always, you are the voice of reason. :D

Besides, I'm not going to see it anyway, so this is all just academic for me.

Cmon people...

Fair enough, but didn't Peter Jackson specifically alter FotR to include Arowyn (sp?), Liv Tyler, in all three of the movies for the express purpose of giving females someone to identify with? In other words to get females in the theatre and to give them someone on screen to cheer, i.e. marketing. In the end most everyone makes movies to make money. If it wasn't profitable we wouldn't have so many cool movies.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

5 mins Max of Arwen with maybe 2 mins of Galadriel
compared to a whole movie of the princess in the first movie (who did NOTHING)

AND now another whole movie dedicated to a mushy love story, Love thats doomed to fail and love that cannot be (how drole) ;) :) :) <-------Smileys!

Not all women (many) will fall for this soppy, mushy, sad, love story and it will bring them all in, in droves...time will tell tho :)

And before you call me a male chauvinist pig , i was waiting in line
to see my beloved 'Fellowship of the Rings' for over 30 mins and
i kept seeing girls after groups of girls after girls walking past me into the theatre next to 'Fellowship'

Not even couples, just groups of girls going to see this one film...the ratio was easily 20:1 (girls to guys)

I was curious so i asked an usher

'Hey dude what movie is playing next door?'
'Vanilla Sky'

Typical
Tom Cruise draws in the girls like flies
and so will this ploy, nice one Georgy...

The love story IS NO big deal (not to me anyway)

If anything the death of Anakins Mother is what draws him finally over to the dark side...

cmon you think im going to sell my soul over a chick? get real girls...
But if someone threatens my blood they pay and pay dearly...

But Georgy knows that Girls dont like all that hate and revenge stuff, oh its all good that he loves his mother and must make her killers pay, even if it drags him to the dark side, but cmon that love story awith Anakin smooching over amidala...how cute...your the man Anakin

Urgh LOVE BLECH, totally icky ooohhhh goey YUK! :)

The day I saw Episode 1 I knew the legend had died under my noise.

I don't know if it was because the 3 first movies(episodes 4-6 (E4-6)) where the first of there kind, Lucas was jung, another staff (advisors) where on it, they still had to compencate with acting (Thinking on things like that bigear-thing vs. Chevbaca (sp.?) -back then it was a impressing costume), som other thing or any combination of the above. -Think I'm covered now.

But somehow I still get the feeling that in E4-6 the effects was used to tell the story. But in Episode 1 the story was just there to stage some flashy movie-effects. But hey... Lucas would not be the first director who had succumbed to that.
