[OT] NHL Stanley Cup Finals

mwahahahahhahahahahahahaha

The Canes have win ! If they rush into Hasek, he will become frustrated, and they will win the series.

I repeat my prediction: The Hurricanes in 7.

I think it'll be the Wings in 6. The 'Canes aren't going to play doormat for Detroit, but they just don't have enough talent to beat the Wings.

I think you're right, but I don't think that's necessarily a good thing, hehe. Like the Yankees, whom I've hated with a passion for quite some time, I'm starting to view the Wings with the same dislike.

There's something about buying a Cup that rubs me the wrong way...

Therefore, go Canes! :D

Go Canes...

One down...

They beat the invincible Wings, at the Joe and still get no respect...

I hope they kick the ever-loving criminy out of 'em...

Amazing

The 'Canes rose to the occasion and the Wings sunk a bit. I'm not really rooting for anything in this series except good hockey, and so far I'm winning! ;)

In other news, The Rangers will name Brian Trottier head coach. Islanders hero becomes Rangers coach. I read that Trottier literally turned his back on Hartley behind the Avs bench when the Hasek stick-measurement went awry. Guess he thought it was a bad idea too.

Hee hee...

Trottier...why not Potvin for crissakes! Well, at least this guy doesn't demean his players...

I wonder if the Fishstick faithful will pull his jersey from the rafters and burn it in effigy...

the wings are hardly the yankees. Remember we waited 40 some years for the cup to return. Those players weren't "bought". They came to detroit because scotty bowman is a winner and illitch is a benevolent manager. Every team should be so lucky.

The yankees have won so many pennats (sic). If you want to find the yankees in the NHL look to the canadiens. They are the number one team of the ages.

and another thing, yzerman, chelios, et al have quietly had amazing careers. you hear all kinds of talk about jagr, messier, lemeiux. yzerman has had one of the greatest hockey careers of all time. he worked his entire career for detroit and is one of the greatest captains ever.

this is one reason the wings will win (though i'm more nervous now!)

I'm not nervous: I always predicted the Wings would lose a game or two in this series. I didn't exactly figure it to be the first game, but...

I was lucky enough to score some last minute tickets to the game last night, and I can say I didn't really think the Wings played all that well. They seemed a little off; they didn't get into a rhythm, and I've certainly see them play better. The 'Canes, on the other hand, I think were playing very well. And even then it was an extremely close game.

I think this game is the wake-up call that will put the Wings in their full fighting performance.

I'll still tentatively predicting Wings in 5, as I've said all along, but we'll have to see.

As an aside, I've seen a lot of folks from all over talk about "we" in reference to the Wings... Who's all from the Detroit area here on the thread (besides me and Quickbeam and presumably Lady Dragon, anyway?)

Before I make any specific replies, let me make a few observations regarding this series, the playoffs in general, and last night's game.
1) The Wings have lost 7 games total in the playoffs thus far, and four of them have been at home in OT. While it's nice to see that they've kept themselves in the games played at JLA, losing all four OT games there is UNACCEPTABLE!! Fortunately, I've only had to sit thru one of those losses in person.
2) Carolina played great considering the week-long layoff, and their resiliency throughout the playoffs has been amazing.
3) Detroit played a marginal game at still could have won. That reality still has me believing the Wings can win in five.

Welverin:
LOL. I hope you're right :D.

Nightfall:
Thanks for the good luck wishes! And of course I remember the brutal sweep Philly suffered at the hands of my Wings in 1997. It was our first Cup in 42 years...you don't forget things like that.

skulrik:
You go from rooting for the Habs, to cheering on the 'Canes?!? What the %&$#@! is up with that?!? You are a strange bird my friend...and likely to be disappointed yet again this playoff year.

Reprisal et al:
Never, ever, compare the Red Wings to the Yankees ;). As tleilaxu points out, the Canadiens are far closer to the Yankees than the Red Wings. Furthermore, other than Hasek and Hull (Robitaille hasn't played a big role yet) who did Detroit buy? What about the Avs last year? Did you all hate Colorado when they rented Bourque and Blake, then added Kasparitis this season? How about the Rangers and Devils and Flyers, all of whom have comparable payrolls and have made waaayy more roster changes in the past five seasons than Detroit?
Hate the Wings all you want, after all it's your prerogative. But at least hate them for valid and accurate reasons. Many of Detroit's core players have been here for quite some time, and five of Detroit's Hall of Famers (Yzerman, Federov, Lidstrom, Shanahan, Larionov) have been here at least six years...if not their entire careers. That's not buying anything folks, that's just good management, coaching and player development!!

Tom:
Trottier has too much class to pull a stunt like that, or even find himself associated with such shenanigans. He'll do a fine job with the Rangers IF they can settle on a roster, and close the revolving door for personnel at Madison Square Gardens.

Chairman:
ROFL :D

tleilaxu:
Yzerman is the best captain of his generation, period. He may be one of the two or three best of all time. And BTW, thanks for your timely remarks :).

Josh:
I'm with you man. Sorry that you had to witness a loss in person. My father went with a buddy of his last night, because I had a Board meeting that was mandatory -- damn their poor planning !! Hopefully I'll be at Game 2 tomorrow night.

Yeah, it was too bad. That's probably the only game I'll see in person this series, though. $200 a pop for tickets, yeesh! And if you spend any time in the Olympia Club as well, that bill just racks up! And only to see them lose less than a minute into overtime...
