[OT] You're so vain...

you know, i used to really hate that song. now, maybe it's nostalgia. maybe it's growing older. but i've taken to hanging out, studying, reading, writing, what-not at a "mr. donuts" shop here in my small town in japan* and they have american music soundtracks that they rotate on a monthly cycle or so. this can be a good or a bad thing, depending on what the current musical selections are since they play the same soundtrack at the same time every day. of course, one of the current choices is "you're so vain" and i've actually grown--not just fond of it--but excited as i hear the songs that precede it come on in anticipation of carly's tune. weird.

*back in america, i was never one to hang out in donut shops. coffee shops, sure. bars, even more likely. but there's just something surreal about eating an "old fashioned" donut and being surrounded by fast-paced japanese house-wife gossiping and schoolkid goofing. on a sad political note [sorry morrus], where has american culture not spread to!?!

Speaking of Vanity

Paladin PC (Name not important): You madame are the most conceited wrech it has ever been my displeasure to work with!!

Alisan of Cuane: I am not conceited. I am vain. One must be pretty to be vain.

Of course it's about me. I'm the only one who really exists. The rest of you are creations I conjured up in my mind to keep myself occupied.

The Sign of One is in da HOUSE!!!

Simon was more than "involved" with James Taylor -- they were married for many years. Recorded some duets together during that time. I hadn't heard their split-up was bitter, though.

The song came out while they were still married, and was rumored to be about several men in Carly's life before their marriage. Could also be about Taylor, though. But Warren Beatty is one of the guys it was about.

Does anyone know who sang backup on the song when Carly performed it on "Saturday Night Live?" (I mean, besides me)

I've always liked your screenname. Don't know why. I just like the way it sounds when I do a James Earl Jones impression and say it aloud... Ya know, and kinda roll the "R"s a little... :D
I'm hearing it now. You're doing that impression if we ever cross paths, just so you know.

I always do a Jabba The Hutt impression when I say it, though. I like the rising tone of the "SOOM" that leads into the rattling "core"...

Solipsism at its finest, eh? If, indeed, this whole universe is merely the dream of my overarching consciousness, i guess the song IS about me.

Roland I have been meaning to ask this for quite some time. You wouldn't happen to be friends with a guy named Garret out of Los Angeles, would you?

I will be sure to practice it everytime I see one of your posts! :)

Oh, my! A Jabba The Hutt impression, eh? Hope you're wearing a bib! :D
