Paladin builder trouble?

Zephrin the Lost

First Post
Hey all-

I have an 8th level paladin in my group with a 17 Cha. Should his Divine Challenge be doing 6 (cha + 3) or 10 (cha + 1/2 level +3) points of damage? CB seems to say 6, which at this level doesn't give the bad guys much pause.

also his heavy shield is listed in red when equipped but seems to be accounted for correctly.

Thanks!

As for the heavy shield, is it magic, and are you using it with another hands-slot item?

The other question is answered by cracking open your PHB, or looking in the Compendium, or simply reading the power itself.

Even if the damage from divine challenge is small relative to the monsters' hit points, they are still taking a penalty to attack rolls from the mark.

In addition, there are ways to improve the damage from divine challenge. For example, if the PC has a good Strength, the Mighty Challenge feat (Divine Power) allows him to add his Strength bonus to the damage.

He has hedge wizard gloves, heroic tier, but when I uneqip them it stays red. Can he not have gloves equipped when he is using a shield?

and the compendium says '+ cha modifier' but the builder lists the con mod as +3 in the power 'card', but it seems that most ability dependent functions scale at +1/2 level. Couldn't find clarification in the class summary, thought I'd ask here.

Is the shield magic? If so, then you can't have the shield's magic properties and the arm-slot magic properties. However, you can still use the mundane aspects of the large shield just fine.

Consult the PHB or the online Compendium. Never rely on the builder as the primary source.

In all honesty, the paladin's mark is one of the weaker ones (imho) but keep in mind that it deals radiant damage, which is particularly important when fighting undead for instance as well as certain other monsters.

The mark also does not roll to hit, it just plain happens. If you're suffering for lack of damage, you can take Mighty Challenge to add your Strength mod to it.

As well, at paragon, many Paladin Paragon Paths add something other than damage to the mark, and what they add can only be described as rediculawesome.

Shield being Red May just be a Bug

As for the shield being red, I believe that is a (recently introduced) error in the character builder. My level 3 cavalier with a heavy shield has his shield show up as red in the builder (but didn't a few weeks ago), but the appropriate bonuses are still being added, so I suspect it will be fixed at some point.

There was a question on the Wizards forum addressing the same thing, and several people have the same bug.
