Of course, it doesn't explain why, when the mortician and he were running away, she was behind him. I mean, if someone's shooting at them, shouldn't the person with the body armor be blocking the blast?

Kate was behind him when he got shot since she was told to stay in the house. She went to peek out and saw the shooting but did not get a good look at the shooter. Kate then came running out while the shooter was getting away.

Yeah, but at the end of the show, they're being pursued by the bad guys. And inventor-guy was in the lead, while Kate was behind him, risking being shot in the back by a load of buckshot...
