Picard Season 3

We don't know what's legal for Starfleet but I should be shocked to find that shooting first is allowed.
Technically, it wouldn't be shooting fist, since they had come to the defence of a Federation vessel that had already been fired upon.

And being outside Federation space works both ways.

I don't know if there was a better possible entrance for Worf. The old man's still got it.
For a character who is supposed to be a an incredible warrior he has spent far too much time being used to show how tough the bad guys are, by being beaten, than being given a chance to shine. Glad to see they gave him that chance.

I'm pretty sure there are plenty in Starfleet who would. They are outside of any claimed space, responding to a distress signal, being threatened by obvious pirates without any political backing. Firing first would clearly be acting in preservation of life, is justified, and is legal.
Obvious? We don't know anything about this craft or its occupants, aside from a rumour circulating among the Fenris Rangers. Simple pirates don't manage to accumulate every weapon known to the Federation and at least one that isn't in one spacecraft.
And operating on the assumption that all Starfleet captains are dumb is itself dumb.

Pirate captain: "You cannot win, my ship is stuffed to the gunnels with black powder!"

If that's not asking for it, nothing is.
You know when you don't shoot a ship that's full of gunpowder? When it's right next to you.

And there are a couple of other things that could go wrong with that idea, too. For example it's full of plastique, not gunpowder, and so doesn't go up in the expected satisfying explosion. Or, as in this case, you're in the HMS Endeavour and facing off against something more akin to the HMS Victory. "Knife to a gunfight" would be a fairly reasonable interpretation.

I finally watched all of the 2nd episode, and I liked it a lot more than the 1st. The emotional stakes were clearer and were being played out before us.

Capt. Shaw doesn't seem to understand the first rule of command, which anyone who's watched ST understands: what happens under your command is your responsibility. He complains a lot about the errors and decisions of people under his command, but that's on you, buddy - if you can't manage that, find another job.

I look forward to finding out what Amanda Plummer's character is up to and why.

Also, real captains don't demand loyalty, they inspire it.

Whatever it is, it's nice to see someone who truly enjoys their work.
