Speaking seriously, I've enjoyed every edition of D&D that I've played: BX, AD&D 1st, 3.0/3.5E, 4E, 5E, and PF 1st. They all have somewhat different things to recommend them. And yet, none of them is my favorite RPG.

I like Pendragon quite a bit, but I don't think anything's topped D&D, for me. Though I feel much the same as you in enjoying every edition I've played (0E, 1E, 2E, B/X, BECM, 3E, 3.5, 4E, 5E, 5E24, and multiple retroclones and variants, lately focusing on The Nightmares Underneath).

While 4e did have some changes that I liked, I didn't like a lot more of the changes, so we stuck with 3e. The changes to 4e that I didn't like were too baked into the system for me to be able to house rule it into shape like I did with 1e, 2e, 3e and 5e. I would have had to rewrite the edition.

Its interesting because PF1 was so appealing to me compared to 4E. Not because it stuck with the ruleset, but because of the APs and what Paizo was doing with Golarion. 5E was interesting, and I dont mind the system, but the adventure products doesnt capture me.

Its also not one or the other, in my mind the system and adventures are chocolate and peanut butter. Both good on their own, but when paired its heaven.

If I want to emulate a film, television, or book property, I like purpose-built RPGs. For example, you mentioned Pendragon, I don't think it has been topped for reflecting the feel of Le Morte d'Arthur.

But for general gaming, or for settings that came from RPGs (especially where several different systems have been used to simulate it), I go with Hero System. I've been playing and running it for 40 years now, and I can do whatever I want with it well enough. I doubled the Hit Location BODY multipliers and used it for Hârn, and it was gritty enough. I added some Skill elements and used it for Traveller (twice, now). I like the flexibility. And I can use it for things that aren't well-represented in gaming, like my 1870s game. Most RPGs that focus on Victorian adventure focus on the 1890s or later; the earlier period is frequently ignored. But Hero did it just fine.
