Re: vinyl & other music formats

My music collection is stupid large. I had amassed hundreds of LPs, 45s, and cassettes- each format- before the advent of CDs. I even had a couple reel-to-reels. I never bought into DATs, though.

But CDs are king. I stopped counting when the collection hit 5k units.

That said, I still have the equipment to play anything I still own. The reel-to-reels are gone, but my vinyl and cassettes- while less numerous than before- are still around. But I don’t understand vinyl’s resurgence. My setup is just shy of audiophile quality, and I still got to hear pops & hissing. I stopped buying other formats completely (but for maybe a half-dozen collectables) after my collection hit 90 CDs

Give me CDs over vinyl any day.

There is an aspect of tending to my vinyl collection and set up like a bonsai tree. Though, yeah for most folks digital offerings are just more convenient.

CDs are not really convenient anymore. My continued embrace of them over MP3s and other pure digital formats- streaming included- marks me as an ancient on the edge of extinction.

Sure, they give me all the data you’d find on an LP sleeve, albeit in much finer print. They’re relatively indestructible; relatively portable. They’re noise free.

But they do take up space. They do have mass- “everything counts in large amounts” as the song goes. This photo is a decade+ old, taken mid-process in loading up some commercial-grade CD carousels to hold most of the collection I had back then.

I’d have more of those racks today…but the company I bought them from is out of business.😔

Sure I was referring to mp3 as the modern convenient format. Far more compressed than CD. Like vinyl the CDs will start to degrade over time as well, but the sweet sound is so worth it.
