And with respect to "multiple endings," shame on Tolkien for even making the attempt, amirite?
Eh. If anything he wrote a book that was too much like real life. He forgot to cut all the boring bits that most readers skip over. If anything, shame on Tolkien for writing a boring book about walking and trees. Dude really needed an editor. You could cut LotR by 2/3 and not miss much in the way of actual story.

Luckily there were enough people with attention spans back then to launch it, and enough today to keep it going.

World of Warcraft needs a rogue-only title, "the Rouge."
Many years ago right after Magic the Gathering took off, there was a huge influx of collectible card games. One of them had a typo on a card rendering the Rouge Spectre. Some magazine was giving out awards to various cards and I remember than one winning Best Card Named for Makeup.

And tastes change to. While I lkve Tolkien, I also miss short novels and novellas being things like they used to be.
They’re still around. Just not mainstream. Japanese light novels typically hit 40-65,000 words. You can find all kinds of stuff on Amazon that’s on the shorter side. Media tie ins. Action-adventure. Hell, even the old short novels and novellas themselves are still around. There’s more than most can read in a lifetime already. Just got to find it.
