Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

I think its perfectly cromulent to make up words. That's how language evolves. It's why we're not speaking in some barbaric half-French half-Angle tongue, but instead speak proper English!

If it's a popular word, others will pick it up; if it's not, it won't. My feelings about the matter can be summed up in a different English word: waltersobchakeit.

It's one thing to make up a word. It's another to take a word that already exists, and then change its meaning on the fly to keep from losing an argument.

"When I said 'alabaster' I was referring to the probability curve of rolling three dice, not a type of gypsum. Why would you even mention gypsum in this conversation about dice?!"

"Because you said 'alabaster,' and alabaster is a type of gypsum. That's literally the definition."

"Well if you had read what I wrote earlier, you'd know I changed that definition to support my argument. "

The common definition of theory is closer to the scientific definition than is the usual derogatory use in the sentence, "Well that's just a theory!"

"Yeah, that's not really the cutting jibe that you think it is."
I disagree. Here’s an article.

I only ever hear non-science types using words like theory in that derogatory way.

“That’s just a theory.”

“So is gravity but you’re not leaving the house from the second story window.”
