No, as thrilled as it sounds, humanity won because of the power of love and empathy. Forming long term commitments to each other, caring for the young, old and sick. Even going as far as bonding with other creatures. (Intelligence and stuff came as a consequence of us being so social and interconnected)
Of course jerks have always existed, but as long as the nice outnumbered the jerks, everybody as a whole was better off.
The ability to sweat better than other species also helped. Made us the best long-distance runners in the animal kingdom.I mean, I take your point, but we also are far from the only social species in the world. Pattern recognition really was the key.
