Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Without having seen the article in question, it's worth remembering that much of what gets called "stoicism" these days has little to do with the Stoics--same as much of what gets called "cynicism" has next to nothing to do with the Cynics. I can see how someone might look at what gets called "stoicism" these days and see at least some correlations with toxic masculinity.

Sure, the whole world is a grift now. I'll still take an approach of quiet, and responsible self reliance, over pretty much anything else being peddled these days.

"Grind alone, in silence." is pretty much how I get through everything in life.

If people are interested in reading about Stoics and Stoicism, I'd recommend Ryan Holiday's The Daily Stoic and Marcus Aurelius' Meditations.

The Daily Stoic is a daily devotional. Each day's entry starts with a quote from a Stoic philosopher and a short discussion of that quote with modern references and updates. Holiday is effectively the face of modern Stoicism. He runs a YouTube channel, a daily newsletter (which is where the mini essays for The Daily Stoic are drawn from), and lectures around the world. He gets a lot of flack from the toxic side of Stoicism because he's adamantly not toxic.

Meditations is the personal journal of the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius, the only man in history to even come close to Plato's ideal of a philosopher-king. It was never meant to be published so it's raw in places, rambling in others, but it's filled with great advice and wisdom.

Fellow Pineapplers,

If you haven't done so yet, take a moment to check out the final entries and vote in the Third Annual Pumpkin Spice RPG contest, run by our own CleverNickName.

Voting thread is located here-
I thought I had this thread on Watch. Some good reads here folks! I'm only seven entries in and already have a top four that's resisting any whittling down.

Throw Lessons in Stoicism by John Sellars on this list. It's a very very short book that gives a little snap shot into the lives and ideas of Seneca, Epictetus and Marcus Aurelius.

It's too bad this thing couldn't have an NHL awards-style weighted system i.e. more points for a 1st place vote than a 2nd.

Truly a rollercoaster of emotions! I read, I laughed, I cried, I voted. Then I moved on. But all entries were pretty great... really. If anyone has any hint of writing talent, submit to this thing next year. The word count is not high, so squeezing out a potentially high scoring entry is well within anyone's reach.

Super cool idea @CleverNickName !

"I loved it. It was much better than Cats. I'm going to see it again and again."
