Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

I wasn't though. I don't have any issue with kraft singles. I am American cheese of all varieties. Especially on this most patriotic day. The only reason other brands came up was people were crapping on American cheese, and some of us made the point that American cheese isn't all kraft singles and cheese wiz. You can get boars head or land-o-lakes and it is a different experience. Someone else made the point that kraft singles were cheap and sometimes that was the only option. So that got me curious and I looked into the actual costs of a block of land-o-lakes cheese and was surprised they came out about the same total cost (though I should say smaller packs of Land-o-lakes were more expensive: roughly the same price for 6 fewer slices).

I am not going to lie. While I have never attempted a full deli block of cheese, I have finished blocks of cheese on my own
Man…I eat high quality stuff too. Craft beer, great cheeses from the deli. Whatever.

It’s all available but I like the classic stuff that makes snobs get the vapors. Well these brats and beer might give some vapors too of a different sort!

I got no shame in my game

oh I see where the confusion is, it wasn't aimed at you yourself, it was more of a general thing.

That was pretty harsh. I stand by what I wrote about American cheeses, but I left out a very important point about Kraft Singles: they are widely available and affordable, and in some households they are the only cheese that some families can get. Yes, sure, Humboldt Fog is far superior in flavor and quality, but it's usually only available in boutique grocery stores, and usually $2 an ounce... that's just not an option for a lot of people (college students, single-parent families, people who live in food deserts...)

So, yeah. Sorry about the rampant, unchecked privilege in my other post. It's something I'm working on.

There are a lot of cheese slices of other varieties that aren't that significantly more expensive than Craft Singles. They may not be the upper-range of their particular types, but people who can never afford those probably can't even afford the Craft Singles regularly, but are reduced to the sort of godawful knockoffs of them I referenced in my dog story.

People need to check their cheese privileges :)

I am actually curious now how much value kraft actually provides. I have always assumed it is cheaper but those slices are individually wrapped and there is like 16 in a package. I wonder if you could buy a block of American cheese, slice it yourself and what the cost would be per slice for each of the brands
Yeah, there are cheaper ways to go. But it isn't just price, its ubiquity. You are not going to find a selection of 50 different fancy cheeses in an inner city or deep rural grocery store or corner bodega, but you'll find kraft singles and velveeta. Also, its what I call working-poor cheap. It's the affordable and easy option for people who have relatively stable, but low, incomes. Growing up, my parents, who married and started having kids before they were in an ideal financial state to do, didn't have the time (both working full time plus side jobs) or money to get fancy. Another thing about Kraft singles is that it is something even younger kids can easily use to make their own sandwiches with.

While kraft singles don't do much for me today, on the rare occasions they are available, I still engage in some white-trash nostalgia, enjoying a kraft single wrapped around a pickle. Alligator in a blanket?

moving away from food: I just love how odd a conversation looks when one side decides to remove all of their comments which also includes quotes.

I was just realizing today that its possible for the blocking function under the right circumstances to produce some really odd results. If you're the OP, there can be a case where someone posts a dozen times in a thread, and then months later you block them (possibly for an unrelated reason) and (because necroing isn't exactly rare around here) someone responds to one of your posts, but the thread has been made inaccessible retroactively.

Its not the end of the world, but its still pretty weird when you get a notification of a response to a post, click on it, and you can't see the response. Its not impossible, someone hitting the thread anew responds to multiple of your posts to hit it several times.
