I started with Wyrd Sisters, so it wasn't too deep in, with that much lore in the past. I did go back to catch up from the beginning but The Colour of Magic felt like a REAL dip in quality and a slog by comparison.
I started with Thud! when I was in high school, and didn't really read any more Discworld until I met people in college who liked them. I had pretty similar thoughts about The Colour of Magic. But I'm also an outlier in the Discworld community because I think the right place to start is probably whatever book you have (with a few exceptions) and don't think it's really a series you need to read in a certain order.

Huh, add that combo to my list.
I get them from my neighborhood bakery. Imagine a pain au chocolat (or chocolatine if you're from one of those parts of the world) but replace the chocolate batons with spam batons, throw some spicy mayo inside it, and put furikake on top. It seems to be a love it or hate it item.

Also this post reminded me I have another one left over, so thank you!

Yup, I'm okay with spam, I'm going to try it out.

Ironically, the Federation had such bad luck early on with augments that they never really got it right; Khan and his kin other than their tendency toward antisocial personality disorder, were more consistent and less flawed than the much later group of human augments that showed up on DS9. Getting a good result out of doing that with humans (as compared to, say, the Illyrians) shows all signs that its hit or miss for a very long time.
The issue with later augments isn't a bug of The Federation, it's a feature. That's what happens when you don't treat people like Petri Dishes that you're willing to burn 10,000 of, to get one 'perfect' result.

That's like the easiest no-prize ever. Since genetic augmentation is illegal, the people who do it are going to be shady and quality control is going to suffer. If the feds had embraced it, they could probably have worked out the kinks.
