My god, that is one ugly guitar lol (apologies if anyone owns it but that color contrast is giving me a headache).

Thanks. I figured what you and @prabe said would be the case, but I have never seen a pickup painted over before (I suppose I may have and just didn't notice).
It’s actually not painted. It’s a plastic cover that matches the paint of the finish. You can get covers like that in the aftermarket, but they’re not always going to be a close match.

But when you’re a company trying to do something special? You can spend some $$$ and make certain the paint & the pickup cover’s plastic are virtually identical shades. There was a high-end guitar company (whose site I haven’t visited in years) that did a couple of King Tut themed guitars. The pickup covers were virtually invisible against the gold & lapis Tut mask backgrounds.

On active pickups @prabe, I had one guitar with them. I remember the guy on the floor really sold their advantages, and the guitar itself (which was a Schecter) was real nice. But I found them so glitchy (which was probably just those particular pickups) and the sound not quite to my liking, I went right back to passive.
Actives have their benefits, buy I don’t like messing with the batteries. The thought of them corroding in my guitar gives
Me nightmares. FWIW, it’s possible the glitch I was was a result of a bad batch of batteries in your case.

Technically, I don’t own any guitars with actives, but I DO have one with onboard batteries. It’s a Fernandes Ravelle Elite, and the batteries power its Sustainer system. (For the uninitiated, a sustainer system allows you to do things like hold a note without signal decay…as long as it has power.)

Right now I just have a little Ibanez (haven't taken the plastic cover off the pickups yet):

I used to have more guitars but sold them over the years. This one was pretty inexpensive but I like how light the body is (these days a light body on a guitar is my biggest priority) and the playability is outstanding. The sound is also quite good for the cost
