Common belief, but absolutely mythical.

I was called for jury duty, and when I mentioned I was a lawyer in solo practice- meaning serving could screw up a lot of other court proceedings- both the defense and prosecution chuckled. I was ultimately selected, and the trial took a week.

I was fortunate I got the gun possession case, and not either of the cases selected before me or after- both got sequestered, and lasted over a month.
I've only made it as far as jury selection once. It was for a product liability case involving Ford. The first day was filling out the questionnaire and answering questions asked. The second day when I got there the judge told us that the case had settled. I was bummed since I had never experienced court from that side of things. Then judge told us that he was bummed, because the trial was supposed to be on Court TV.

I would also like to serve on a jury, but I doubt that any sane lawyer would want me empanelled. I have, on the other hand, been in the stand as a witness in a case involving a guy who owned a computer shop, where he was reselling stolen computer equipment. The Crown didn't seem too happy when I agreed to speak with the defence counsel alone, before testifying, but she was quite happy with my testimony. At one point the judge didn't like the way that the defence was talking around a question and he came straight out, and asked me himself. I didn't know that was permitted, under our rules of procedure but it was a bench trial anyway, not a jury trial.
