Well, actually, the npc in question was a big strapping farmguy and my character is a buff Chiss lightning sorceror named Chokey S'murf, so there wasn't a whole lot of jiggling going on...
Or how all the vowels in "Connecticut" are pronounced as "i" except for the actual "i"... To us locals it's pronounced "Ki-NET-a-kit".

Congratulations, you have discovered the schwa.
As someone who spent years working with pronunciations, I can say you can go a long way in English pronunciation by making every single unstressed vowel a schwa. It's not perfect, but it's probably a reasonable first thing to try.

Whenever I look at something like this, I realize that if English was a programming language, I would be unable to write code in it, in any functional way. I simply do not know the actual rules, or components beyond a casual level.
I still remember a spelling test from primary school. I had learned the rule, "I before E, except after C."
