I played
Doki Doki Literature Club last night.
A friend of mine had bought it for me for Christmas a few years ago and I had forgotten all about it, so it sat in my Steam library for years. I finally picked it up yesterday purely on a whim, because it looked like a cute little anime VN/dating game and I was in the mood for something light and shallow.
I went in totally blind, not knowing anything at all about it...I didn't even visit the Store Page for it. I just clicked "Install," and then "Play," and then four and a half hours fly by and I'm at the final scene and I'm all like
It's a brilliant deconstruction of anime/VR game tropes. It's a self-aware game, in the sense that
House of Leaves is a self-aware book. In fact, it sort of turns that
House of Leaves idea on its head: where
House of Leaves deconstructs the horror story to reveal a love story at its core,
Doki Doki Literature Club deconstructs the dating sim to reveal a horror story at its core. It's brilliant, but hoo boy. I wasn't ready.
