Because the modern world moves much more quickly than it did in the Dark Ages, does much more at a distance, and is far more populous. Being where you need to be to apply in-person influence without getting noticed is harder.

Like, if you want a really nice place to stay in a major metropolitan area, actually buying a place is probably easier to manage than constantly bending people to your will.

And, say you want takeout - that driver for Luigi's Pizzaria looked really tasty - but Doordash does not bend to your will.
