My understanding is that it's somehow safer as a distributed social network, limiting how much damage can be done by the parent company.

Yes, I would say that Threads is definitely one of the obvious alternatives. A bunch of people I follow on Instagram, Facebook, and Threads announced that they closed their Twitter (X) accounts and moved to Bluesky. A bunch of celebrities have as well.
