Apparently there were enough people finding alternative lubricants that the rules now specify that graphite is the only permissible one.
I got disqualified one year at the Derby because someone complained about my car having a "floating" ballast weight (it was on a lubricated front-back rod with springs attached to the weight on both ends) that slid forward when the nose of the car was pointed downward on the ramp then went back to the middle when it hit the flat part.... I'd designed it myself. The complaint was lodged by somebody's aerospace-engineering-management father who'd had their team build the kid's car...![]()
I like to think of them as "guidelines" or "hopes and dreams" rather than "rules"!It sounds like the dad was right, though? Kinda sounds like it was against the rules. I admire the fact that you did it yourself. But imagine how much worse you could have lost if the engineer dad was allowed to do that.![]()

To me, that sort of thing is right up there with parents taking their kid's school charity chocolates in to work, to sell, then the 'kid' winning a prize for sales. Back in public school I think that I was the only kid who sold his own school Christmas cards. I didn't even come in last.Nope, I'd made a point to follow all the design, materials and weight rules to the letter - and nothing in the rules stipulated any specifications about what could be used for ballast weight and how they needed to be attached to the car... My car was weighed, inspected and approved by the race officials, and nobody said anything until I had the gall to beat out the one car's time - despite the fact that neither of us came in first anyway.
It was all about the kid whining to his dad and the dad whining to the judges who happened to be his friends.
How dare you.You don't need to cite your almost certainly imaginary players. Just post your opinions.
