Indeed. I maintain that Lincoln’s assassination was one of the greatest tragedies in US history. If he’d survived, I think things might have turned for the better. Instead, we got Johnson punishing the southern states via military occupation and northern grifters (the so-called carpet baggers) taking advantage of the situation. This bred resentment and led to things like the Lost Cause myth. Today you can find Americans who think it’s un-American to remove statues of and rename forts named after rebels who didn’t want to be part of America anymore …Found when it al went wrong
