I would say that a better practice is the sort of thing that I've experienced on construction sites; a marshaling location so that a head count can easily be done after evac, because everyone is expected to be in the same place.

Yup, though it's less about how you exit and more about where you go once you have. Get out fast then worry about where, afterward.

One thing to remember is that we are taught to save lives, not buildings, get everyone out, and set up a defensible area then use cannons to contain the fire so it doesn't spread.

So... Jack did this with a Testors hobby knife earlier tonight... 
The cut was at a very shallow angle, so it didn't go very deep inward, but did slice all the way straight through the triangular area. Bled like a bastard, but I immediately applied pressure and apparently seems to have stuck itself back together without needing stitches.
It's the second best I've ever gotten meself with one of those things.
