I remember growing up that "Wikipedia is not a source"
Yep, if it wasn't reliable there wouldn't be so many people in positions of power trying so hard to discredit it/jailing wiki editors. Distressingly, I learned there's actually a wiki page listing the latter recently.Water's not wet without a citation on Wikipedia. It's been a reliable source for more than a decade.
And, over time, it got better*. AI will probably get better, too. But it's not there yet.I remember growing up that "Wikipedia is not a source"![]()
Those teachers weren't exactly wrong, there are issues with wikipedia as a source. The further you stray into more niche subjects the more you run into the issue of editors who can use how strict they are about sources to impact the page. If you go look at the Judges Guild page, for instance, there is a fairly glaring omission from the page. And if you go into the history of the page you'll see that people have tried to add that info but it's deleted as places like ENWorld aren't considered a credible source.I remember growing up that "Wikipedia is not a source"![]()
* Although the best way to cite Wikipedia is still to look at its citations and then read and cite those directly.
It's not a source for professional purposes, but for personal use it's good enough. And if you need more, the articles are usually very well sourced to places that are good sources.I remember growing up that "Wikipedia is not a source"![]()
Something I created has its own Wikipedia page and when that page was being created years ago, quotes from me (under my own name, obviously), explaining the thing's origins, weren't deemed to be credible. And if you go into the history of the page you'll see that people have tried to add that info but it's deleted as places like ENWorld aren't considered a credible source.
That's true, never ascribe to malice that which is adequately explained by pedantry.Something I created has its own Wikipedia page and when that page was being created years ago, quotes from me (under my own name, obviously), explaining the thing's origins, weren't deemed to be credible.
Sometimes folks are weaponizing the system, but other times, I think they're just painfully officious.
