and i assume you all get your work skills from the same mostly predefined progression plan that you level up on at an equal rate?
Sure, but just like our IRL careers don't define who were are as people, classes don't have to define the PCs.

In 5e, I just don't think having multiple PCs with the same class is that big of a deal. You could give four players identical PC character sheet with the same class, level, backgrounds, skill selections, feats, and attributes. They can only fill in the name. It won't break the game and each PC can be very different based on how the players roleplay. It might even help the players get more into the roll playing if they don't have mechanical differences to use as a crutch.

Sure, why not? If I'm going to make just one character I don't need all the options, I just need one character that I can fit in these options. What stings the most is not having feats, so I would discard playing a human or a fighter, since both are a too plain for me without feats. Maybe I would discard playing a wizard too, for the limited spells selection.

Edit: fun fact, I'm doing something similar right now as a farewell to 2014 5e, but instead of 5.1 only I'm doing it PHB only. The players brought me a dwarf war cleric, a drow land druid, a half-orc totemic barbarian, a halfling arcane trickster and a human lore bard.

Yes. Would not mind some house rules to make all the classes a little more viable, like the first short rest of a day taking only 20 minutes.

I voted no, I have spent the last three years participating in 2 multi-year campaigns that offered me a wide variety of character-building options. I could do a multi-year campaign using only the 5.1 SRD, but it would feel limiting because of the knowledge that there is more material out there.

I picked No. And it was mostly opportunity cost. Would I mind playing like this? Nope, I could do that. But why would I invest several years into a campaign with a pared down set of options when there are all these other games I want to try even more than play the full version of that game.

In other words, I'd have no problems playing like that if other RPGs didn't exist.
