SO why make a claim about it at all??"Favorite" and "best-selling" are different things. The only thing you can say for certain about the "best-selling" RPG is that more units of it have been sold than any other RPG.
Nothing else.

Which renders the OP’s point kind of meaningless: the mechanics have always restricted playstyle. This isn’t a 5e issue.Correct. The requirement to be lawful is an intentionally-limiting drawback, in return for which you get the various benefits of being a Monk that other classes don't get.
If you're not willing to accept the drawback then you don't get the benefits: no Monk for you.
I think it would matter less than those other factors, yes...but it will still matter. But if all the other factors listed are more important than the actual rules... that shouldn't matter, or at least it should matter less than the fact that it still has all those things going for it... right?
People seem to think popularity is important. Also, I don't recall the OP talking about how much money WotC has made on 5e.SO why make a claim about it at all??
No the OP made a popularity claim...which we have no info on.People seem to think popularity is important. Also, I don't recall the OP talking about how much money WotC has made on 5e.
So do you think that if the next edition of D&D replaced it's rules with those of Fate it would still be the #1 selling rpg? Or better yet what rules set do you think they could replace it with (that isn't a variant of their d20 system) and still remain #1?I think it would matter less than those other factors, yes...but it will still matter.
That name is unbelievably important in terms of popularity. Regrettably so IMO.So do you think that if the next edition of D&D replaced it's rules with those of Fate it would still be the #1 selling rpg? I am speaking to the rules... its still called D&D but when you open up the phb it's the rules for playing FATE... do you believe it would still continue to be the #1 selling rpg? That name is unbelievably important in terms of popularity.
They were hardly the first to make the (metaphorical) claim that 5e is "everybody's second favorite RPG". Have you called out everyone you've heard make that claim? No the OP made a popularity claim...which we have no info on.
