25 points.

Though I find I prefer to be lazy and not actually point buy, and just use the default array for 25 points: 15,14,13,12,10,8.

High stats don't make characters heroic -- actions do.

when using point buy i go for this one not included in the poll too.

i prefer 3d6 in order. str, int, wis, con, dex, cha

28 point buy....and then give the PCs 2 points to buy higher ability scores at 2nd level and 3rd level. It's a Campaign thing. :)

28 points when we use the point-buy system. Not all players are satisfied with it though, because it makes easy for characters to have various average scores, but it's almost impossible to get a 17 or 18 while keeping at least one other good score.

I've also used 79 points, abilities starting at 0, and all scores purchased at 1-1 basis. You end up with the character you want; not a lot of high scores but a lot of customization.

I believe the method of allowing each player to choose his ability scores is worth trying, I may apply it in my next campaign just to see what happens.

Cheers,

Larger than life, high powered, grand, epic, heroic. The lines (or definitions) blur for some people. It think that is essentially what that's all about.

It does. For me though high stats mean the game is easier for the character. And I don't see herioc being easy.

Granted that it definitely depends on the campaign. My problem with low point buy is that if you use a published campaign setting (Forgotten Realms, for example) your characters are going to be much weaker then the NPCs. Go through the FRCS and calaculate the point buy for the NPCs...they range from 32 up to 50+ for some. I just feel that if my players are going to be the heroes of a campaign setting, they need to be on par with some of the existing NPCs.

Ack, I should have voted 32+. Oh well...

We use a combination of point buy and random rolling... 33+1d6
So a character can start anywhere from 34 to 39 points. Why so high you might ask? We do this mainly to help out the classes that are MAD. Of course, the classes that aren't so MAD get to take advantage of this as well.

I should also note we play max HPs every level. We don't like that a bad roll can make your Wizard end up w/ more HPs than your Barbarian. So far it works out fine, it's not over powering, characters DO last longer (obviously) but they also die as well. We need this, as our DM often throws things that at us that outclass our group. For example, at the end of our last session, the DM left us with a cliffhanger... We have a CR 37 dragon (with lower level dragons) headed for our group and we are all only around lvls 6 to 8, hehe.
