Poll: Magic in your d20 Modern? Yes or No?

Does your D20 Modern games have a magic in them, or are they strictly non-magic?

  • Yes - There is an element in Magic in most d20 Modern Games I play.

    Votes: 67 69.1%
  • No - No magical elements allowed in most d20 Modern Games I play.

    Votes: 30 30.9%

Generally speaking I dont want to play any game that doesnt have at least some kinf of fantastic element in it, be it magic, future tech, sci-fi stuff, or super powers. So I voted "Yes" there are elements of magic in my d20 M games. However, I have ran games for d20 M where there was no overt use of magic or any fantastic element but there were people who believed such things existed and others who had to deal with them as if they were real to a certain degree because their antagonists believed them to be real.

(Unapologetic plug - you can see some of my d20 M magic in Imperial Age Magick from Adamant Entertainment. Follow the link in my sig.)

Poll seems to be going well. It seems most responses is leaning towards "yes, there is an element of Magic in the d20 modern games" they play.

But it's far from a landslide from what I can tell.

Yes, but of a dark and sinister CoC style, generally, and not the "F/X" model.
Ditto. I love the X-files, Dark•Matter or Delta Green model of modern, conspiracy type games with some weirdo occult action. I like it so much, I've ported CoC magic into my fantasy games to replace D&D magic. D&D magic in d20 Modern--not so much. Not at all, as a matter of fact.

For games explicitly in a modern or near-past/near-future setting, no. (I voted no, BTW).

However, I consider d20 Modern far preferable to D&D and would use it for fantasy, as well, so in that sense it would be a 'yes.'

Why is that?

Its flexible base classes, occupations system, class-based defense, power level cap on magic, more developed vehicle rules, action points, and combination of hit points with a low massive damage save threshold make it better suited to emulating basically every non-D&D fantasy story I've ever read, watched or played in another medium.

I don't care for D&D's particular genre of fantasy, but it does have a lot of nice material. d20 Modern is close enough that I can incorporate the best D&D material while using a better base system.
