POSER: Wand of Anyspell

First Post
Can a cleric with Craft Wand feat (if they can get it), or a 12+ Warlock, or Artificer (who can make anything if they supply the DC Check, create a Wand of Anyspell....or Wand of Greater Anyspell?

If so, what would be the effect if a Warlock or Artifier (both of whom can use such an item with a DC check) used such an item? How would it function if at all?

Or make it really interesting and make a Schema of Anyspell!

Anyspell uses your domain spell slots, so if you do not have domain spell slots, it does a grand total of nothing. Warlocks and Artificers, generally speaking, do not have domain slots.

That's what I thought, but a cleric COULD benefit from the Wand, right? Or does the nature of Anyspell preclude the need for a wand?

Assuming the Cleric doesn't have the apropriate domain to get anyspell to begin with, but does have some UMD? A cleric with an anyspell device and the UMD to use it ought to be able to benefit from Anyspell, yes.

(Something about this conversation makes me long for 3.0, when a Rogue could have animal companions and familiars using UMD! I digress....)

I don't have the book in front of me to check the exact wording of Anyspell, but yeah, this should work just fine.

Any time the Cleric casts Anyspell (prepared, from a scroll, from a wand, whatever) they can spend 15 minutes studying a spell book and prepare a 3rd level or lower Arcane spell in their 4th level Domain slot.

The same trick also works (perhaps even better) for a Wizard with a staff of Rary's Mnemonic Enhancer and/or Mordenkainen's Lucubration

Ah. I see. thanks.

I am a bit confused about one comment. Why would a cleric using a staff or wand with Anyspell need to make a UMD check? I thought one did not need to make a roll if the ability in question appears on their spell list.

If a cleric does not have the Spell domain (which is the only one that grants Anyspell), they do not technically have the spell on their spell list. Therefore they could not use a Wand of Anyspell without first making a Use Magic Device check to emulate having that spell on their spell list.

A Wand of Anyspell can be made, but Greater Anyspell would require a Staff or something else, since it's not low enough in level for a Wand (Anyspell itself is 3rd-level).

Anyspell specifically requires use of your 3rd-level domain spell slot, in which the chosen arcane spell gets prepared after casting Anyspell. Therefore you cannot use a Wand of Anyspell unless you possess a 3rd-level domain spell slot (therefore being a cleric, or a shaman from Oriental Adventures, or something else that gains domains and domain spell slots specifically).

Druids, rangers, and paladins couldn't use such a Wand, as a result (and clerics or shamans or whatnot would need the Spell domain in order to use such a Wand without difficulty; without the Spell domain they would need to succeed at Use Magic Device checks to emulate having Anyspell on their spell list, in order to activate the Wand).

So, they also need an open slot, right? The Anyspell doesn't just replace an existing, prepared spell, does it?

Re: nitpicking, isn't this the Rules forum? An inaccurate or sloppy question could be evidence of the misunderstanding and/or further problems.
