Probably a stupid question but...

Hello, long time lurker/first time poster here. In the touching thread authored by Tarrasque Wrangler, he mentions Hastur. Seems to be a rather important person/creature/whatever but I've never heard of him/her/it. Could somebody explain for the newbie?

Hastur the Unspeakable (said because, like Bloody Mary, if you said his name, he took notice of you and sent minions to claim you) was an alien being, created by either H.P. Lovecraft or Clark Ashton Smith (I forget which), which lives in the Aldeberan star system. He desires to be free of his home/prison, and has monstrous winged servitors known as byakhee (another name you may see spread around when Hastur is mentioned).

The Yellow Sign, the King in Yellow, and the Unspeakable Oath are all pieces of Hastur-lore from various stories.
