I got into a discussion with one of my players who sometimes GM's. I told him the following, I think this is how it works, he said it was capped by Level.
Basically here is the breakdown.
A 1st level psion picks Energy Ray
For 1 point the ray does 1d6 points of damage.
for each additional point of damage it does another d6 points of damage
So does this mean at (following does not assume bonus points)
1st level he can use up all his points (2) to make a 2d6 Energy Ray.
2nd level he can use up all his points (6) to make a 6d6 Energy Ray.
The advantage of the system is that you have more flexability in how you handle your powers, at the cost of potentially burning through your points/day allotment really fast.
I wish the default magic system was more like this, I know that the Unearthed Arcana has a mana point system that mimics this, but supposedly not as good.
