Publishers that dislike d20 . . .

I worked on those books and can assure you that for the most part those of us involved in the process don't hate d20. (I can't speak for everyone, especially that nasty man John Kovalic. He's just so mean sometimes. :) )While the books are certainly written for laughs I wasn't doing it because I dislike d20.

But Evil Stevie had to go and take out the perfectly good bonus spell table for high Inteilligence that I revised for him.

Sample:

Intelligence 3: You can barely talk and you want to cast spells?

I've heard that Mongoose (at least the upper management) would be far more interested in doing miniature wargames, but do d20 because it's profitable.

Hmm, is there something about being a successful British RPG company that leads to this corruption of the initial vision? :)

Although thinking about it, WoTC's people seem pretty minis obsessed themselves & they've gone out of their way to make 3.5e as wargamelike as possible, so maybe it's not just GW & Mongoose suffer from this.

You would almost think the whole RPG hobby had its roots in tabletop wargaming or something.

Minis can be pretty profitable too (look at Games Workshop).

A lot of guys seem to come out against d20 and almost just seem to be railing against "the Man," because of WotC's size. Like, "I'll never sell out and play D&D, those guys screwed Gygax." It seems silly to me.

One of the best lines I have seen on EN World was from Buzz, paraphrasing here: Some people wear their hatred of d20 on their sleeve, like they're somehow sticking it to The Man. Well, The Man doesn't know a d20 from a Dee Snider. The Man thinks we're all a bunch of dorks.

If a publisher truely hates d20 it will likely show in their product and thus impact sales. Our group is totally sold on 3.5/d20 but it took about 10 months of tooth pulling to get everyone to come over to it from our stacks of 1ed/2ed books. Once they learned it nobody wants to do anything else now. As far as the attitude of Gygax getting screwed out of his creation, it isn't about that. Gygax isn't sitting in your basement playing with you and your buddies. Play what works and have fun. For us, d20/3.5 streamlines the game, we can easily modify rules as desired and disregard those we don't like.

Cook and Pramas just did in this thread.

i've changed my sig on about 12 message boards to reflect that fact.

edit: i never joke about D&D.

well, I believe that they were indeed having a fun poke as opposed to being serious.

I've seen this happen in the past and wondered what people thought of that sort of attitude. In my opinion it's not difficult to spot products created by people that dislike d20 but I'm wondering if anyone even cares.
I've never encountered this attitude (but then, maybe I'm just too dull to notice... or that I just don't have enough product experience - which, if such an attitude actually exists, I'm thankful that I don't have enough product experience!).
