Questions:

When attacking while mounted, how is it you get the horse to attack? Does that also apply to the Ride DC 5? Does this harbor your attack sequence?

Let's say a man standing on a tree branch throws a net at someone on the ground. He succeeds in the hit. If, with the rope, he holds it and jumps off the tree branch, the rope across the branch, what happens to the person in the net? Are they dragged upward? Would aposed strenght checks be made?

Just out've curiousity, how come a spiked chain doesn't do any damage when you trip someone? The spikes along the chain would tear into them, if it wrapped around them.

Can you Counterspell with a Wand of Dispel Magic?

1) fight with warhorse - DC 10, if you direct your war-trained mount to attack in battle, you can still make your own attack or attacks normally (under ride skill)

2) i don't think the person in the net would be dragged upward, because the net isn't underneath them (they would fall out the bottom). i understand the 'a fighting net has small barbs in the weave', but those wouldn't be strong enough, IMO, to lift a person off the ground.

3) i think it's just a function of the trip mechanic, since your attack is not to damage an opponent, but make them prone.

4) i don't think so. you can only ready a partial action, and spell trigger activation is a standard action

1. Have the horse attack as well.
2. if they are stuck in the net, if the person can get them off the ground (sufficient strength/weight), then they should go up. How would an opposed strength check work to keep someone from being lifted off the ground?
3. That's the rules. Change it if it makes more sense in your game.
4. don't know.

The only difference between a partial action and a standard action is that a partial action doesn't allow a move, but it usually allows a 5-foot step. You can activate a wand with a partial action without a problem, just like you can cast an additional spell with your haste partial action.

So, K, Can you use a wand to counterspell? :)

Oh, and, here's another question:

Are large shields strapped to the arm, or held? Here's what I'm wondering about doing: A mounted fighter charging with the lance. After his first attack, he drops the lance, and since his flail is in his other hand (Where the shield is strapped to) it's a free action.

Or is that too munchkin? I'm making an ambush and making it rough. :)

I don't believe so. When you counterspell, you're altering the spell for this very purpose as it is being cast. You can't alter a spell being released from a magic item, except in the rare occassion with other spells, like those found in Monte Cook's The Book of Eldritch Might II.

As far as I know, they're held, but I can't quote a rule on that.

EDIT: By the way, I know this is off-topic, but did you find my character creation guide useful at all?

"you strap a shield to your forearm and grip it with your hand" PH pg 106

thanks for clearing that up, k, but the original question was 'can you counterspell with a wand of dispel magic'. so, can't you use a wand to make a dispel check (d20+wand's caster level)?

I havn't looked at it. I'm basicly trying to urge some D20 company into making it, cuz I think it'd be really cool. :) But I'll get around to lookin' (I have so many PDFs on my computer as is).

Edit: I just read that comment again. Whoops.
