Question about Quick Draw, AoOs, and ranged weapons.

Ok, I just took part in a thread about Quick Draw and it got me thinking. If I were using a bow and a monster came into the area I would threaten if I were wielding a melee weapon, would I get an attack of opportunity if I dropped the bow as a free action and drew my sword with Quick Draw?

If not, it would be a great feat, especially for archers.

That is what I thought. Cool idea though. Anyone have a home brew feat (or come up with one) or know a supplement one is published so I can put this cool idea to use?

hmmm... free action says. 'you can perform one or more free actions while taking another action normally.' so if an AoO is a normal action, maybe you could. now i'm all confused, where's kreynolds? he knows everything. (he is the Pimp of the PH, you know)

edit- anyway, in games i've played in it's always been 'on your initiative only'. so sayeth the DM

You'd need to perform the quickdraw to get the AoO. So, not this isn't possible. Now, if after all your attacks you dropped the bow and drew the sword this would perfectly fine.

Whether or not an AoO is a normal action is immaterial. Look at it like this...People provoke AoOs from you because you threaten an area. If you don't threaten an area, opponents don't draw AoOs from you. So, if you are wielding a bow, you don't threaten an area, thus I could run circles around you and you would never be able to take an AoO...because you don't threaten an area... because you are wielding a bow...which doesn't threaten an area.

Make sense?

LOL That's just too sweet, but I surely don't know everything. After all, the proof is in my Defending weapon enhancement post. :)

The funny thing is I game with him, and he still goes to you for the answer.

In this case you would never be able to make the attack of opportunity (ie, start the other action) because you are not threatening the area being moved through.

To make an attack of opportunity you have to threaten the area being moved through.

Unless you are armed with a melee weapon (or you're a Monk, or have an ability that lets you threaten with a ranged weapon) you do not threaten ANY area and are never allowed to take ANY attacks of opportunity.

The whole chain of events that you envisioning would never take place because of this.
