Mercule Adventurer Oct 20, 2015 #9 Introducing Eladrin was unnecessary, but made a certain kind of sense, when they wanted to avoid subraces (my assumption, from reading only the PHB). Introducing Drow (as PCs) was ill-advised, and has never made sense.

It was probably done for the same reason tieflings officially became NPCs: So many people were playing them that it was pointless not to give in to the inevitable.
