Ranged Sneak Attack Question

Ok, my question is short and simple.

Can a Rogue (or someone with Rogue levels) flank an opponent?

I always ruled that since they didn't threaten any squares around them they couldn't but recent posts have seemed to indicate otherwise.

Thanks for the help.

Of course. Just not with a ranged weapon.

Because thats what the rules say. Recent posts haven't indicated otherwise.

When in doubt check out Wizards message boards which has search enabled.

Can a rogue sneak attack with a ranged weapon? IIRC, yes, if the target is within 30'.

Can a rogue use a ranged weapon to flank? No. You can only flank when you threaten the area the target occupies. Ranged weapons do not threaten an area.

Thus, you cannot flank and sneak attack with a ranged weapon. If you are using a ranged weapon, you must find some way to deny the target's Dex Bonus to AC to sneak attack.
