Rangers do damage and, ummmmmm, well, that's pretty much it but they do it well. Melee Rangers do a better job of soaking some damage so it doesn't all fall to the defenders or overtax the leaders. I personally find Archer Rangers dull, but they're great for new players.

Mages are "tweaky" and can be a lot of fun. Controllers can do more overall damage due to area effects but don't do as well against Solos or Brutes without unloading their dailies. Their dailies rock though and they have a lot of cool powers too.

Personally, I like Defender types the best, but that's just me.

In 4e they've broken character types down into fairly well defined roles. Each class falls into one of these roles, with perhaps a little flavour of one of the other roles for added spice.

Defender - Hit me, not my buddies. Hey man, where do you think you're going? ex. Fighter

Striker - Hit one guy, hit him good, until he's dead, dead, dead. ex. Ranger

Controller - The characters and enemies are just chess pieces. I hit many for a little damage, move them, and deny them access to areas. ex. Wizard

Leader - Everything works out better if people do what I say. They hit better and more often, they take less damage, and they heal faster. ex. Warlord

Quite simply put, if you like hitting often and dealing tons of damage to a single foe, choose rogue. If you like attacking and hindering multiple opponents at once and using spell rituals to solve problems outside of battle, choose wizard.

I am playing a wizard in one campaign and it's very fun - I often ensure the victory for the party in the first round - by immobilizing troublesome foes, hitting the enemies while they are clumped up, etc.

It's all about preferred play style.

A typical rogue is about darting through the combat zone and striking at single targets in close range for a large amount of damage (when conditions are right to get the sneak attack bonus) - it can be one of the highest (if not the highest) damage dealers in a party!

A typical wizard is more about hanging to the edge of the fight to avoid getting attacked. His attacks are mostly ranged attacks and area type attacks to get targets that are far away and/or get several targets at once. However, he isn't going to do a lot of damage (it's a little damage to many targets vs. a lot of damage to one target that a rogue does). A wizard also has abilities to manipulate what the enemies do (such as putting up walls at later levels to make enemies go around or block them from shooting your friends, or slowing the targets so that they can't run as fast allowing your friends more time to concentrate on killing something else first, and so on).

_personally_ of those two choices, I would prefer to play a wizard because it suits my play style better. But it is completely a personal choice of playstyle.

If you're having trouble choosing between Wizard and Rogue, then you should consider Warlock and (if you have access to PHB2) Sorcerer. I don't say that to complicate matters, but because those two classes may provide you with options partway between Rogue and Wizard.

Warlocks are Strikers, like Rogue, so they maneuver around the battlefield picking their targets and hitting them for decent damage. But they have a strong magical feeling and can impose pretty good status effects on their targets. Compared to Wizards, Warlocks have some of the sneakiness and flashiness or rogues and a lot better story hooks. In general, people on the internet complain Warlocks are a bit weak but they also consistently get ranked as one of the most fun classes to play.

Well, first you want to be a....Ranger. And live a life of danger!

But ok, it seems you're a brand new spanking player, right?

I would therefore pick whichever one isn't in the existing group. If there's none of either, see if there's another player in the same role. Get advice from the people you're playing with, if they're any good, they'll be able to steer you way better than we can.

If they're not, then you probably won't enjoy playing with them too much anyway.

And note, making a new character is relatively easy, you can try each class and see how you like it.
