Rank your favorite films of the year [Revised and Updated]

My top 10 this year:

1) LotR: RotK
2) Pirates of the Caribbean
3) The Animatrix
4) Matrix: Reloaded
5) Matrix: Revolutions
6) Kill Bill v.1
7) Finding Nemo
8) X2
9) T3
10) Daredevil

I have not seen The Last Samurai yet, so my list is open to change (ever so slightly - as I'm unsure that T3 and Daredevil deserve a place there).

The only movies I went to the theater to see this year were Matrix:Reloaded & Revolutions, and X2. As for RoTK, based on comments here and at the Barrow Downs, and my brothers review I'm waiting for the EE to avoid the same let down I had with the theatrical version of TTT. Maybe it won't be as "skippy" as a few friends have told me it is if they aren't worried about running time on the EE DVD.

So it goes like this...

1. Matrix Reloaded - *****

I went in expecting insane mega kung-fu action and I got all that and more. The highway chase was brilliant and Agent Smith as great as usual. I liked it as much as the first one.

2. X2 - ****

Good movie, liked seeing Wolverine go nuts on the troops invading the mansion. Better than the first movie.

3. Matrix Revolutions - ***

I went in expecting insane mega kung-fu action and what I got was minimal kung-fu, a buttload of powered battle armor vs robot action instead. The ending was a little weak, but at least it wasn't what I expected so I was kind of suprised. A good movie that was damaged by the greatness of the two prior flicks, I was expecting something different than a movie based almost totally in the "real world". Plus I liked the first Oracle better.

Hmmm...tough, there were some surprises for me. Especially T3, which I finally saw last week. :)

1. Return of the King(of course)
2. Pirates of the Carribean
3. X2
4. T3
5. Animatrix
6. Daredevil
7. Matrix Revolutions
8. Matrix Reloaded
9. Finding Nemo
10. Hulk

I really liked T3, X2, Pirates, RotK, American Splendor, and others that I can't think of offhand - oh yeah, I liked American Wedding - that was fun.

Of course, i haven't seen everything yet.

And a nod to the new Galactica - I thought that was awesome.

1. The Return of the King

*mile wide gap*

2. Kill Bill Vol 1
3. Pirates of the Carribean
4. Terminator 3 (my favorite of the Terminator series)
5. New BattleStar Galactica
6. The Hulk
7. X 2
8. Matrix: Reloaded (decided not to see Revolutions after this & Animatrix)
9. Daredevil

Worst: Charlie's Angels Full Throttle (ARRGGHHH!)

As usual, I can't even say I've seen ten films in the theatre this year! ;)

OTOH, here we go:

#1 -- LotR/RotK: hands down the best film I saw this year. The only thing to compare it to is TTT & FotR. Nothing else has come as close since, well, probably like Gandhi.

#2 -- Pirates of the Carribean: Had very low expectations, had a blast and actually went back to see it a second time on the big screen (a major rarity!). Johnny Depp made the film! :D

#3 -- Finding Nemo: It is Pixar. I expected good and got more. Lots of fun!

#4: umm, well, I saw at least a couple other films. X-2, far better than X-1, was a fun popcorn film. Whale Rider was nice. I may have seen a couple others, but I am forgetting at the moment. Nothing else really struck me.

Looking forward to seeing Lost In Translation tomorrow :D

Funny -- I was all getting ready to mention Winged Migration, and then Diaglo beats me to it.

It's an odd little movie, and definitely not to everyone's taste. If there's two minutes of speech in the movie, I'd be surprised.

Human speech, that is.

Winged Migration is a documentary, one of the most astounding documentaries I've ever seen, about birds. Although a few of their shots are obviously setups, most of them are spectacular and astonishing. Without dialogue, there's love, mystery, suspense, tragedy, horror, and comedy.

If you've got the least little bit of natureboy in you, you owe it to yourself to check it out sometime. The director did a similar movie about bugs & snails, called Microcosmos; it's also supersweet.

My list of movies, therefore:

ROTK (of course!)
POTC (if anyone could ever convert this straight boy to being a gay skankosexual, it'd be Captain Sparrow)
Winged Migration
28 Days Later
X-2
The Hulk (I really liked it right as I left the theater, but it didn't stick with me much at all)
Kill Bill (I really didn't like it as I left the theater, but it's grown on me)

Daniel

My picks... in no order just know that RotK was #1
LotR:RotK
Kill Bill Vol1
Finding Nemo
American Wedding
PotC-Black Pearl

Did not see but think they may be up there:
Last Samurai
Underworld
Cold Mountain

TV:
Smallville
Alias
24
Law and Order
SG-1 (new convert)

The problem, for me, with lists like this at this time of year is that I generally don't see the year's best movies until they come out on DVD. I didn't see The Quiet American until a few months ago, for instance.

I end up seeing all the blockbusters. Of which:

1) Return of the King
2) The Last Samurai
3) Master and Commander
4) Hulk
5) Pirates of the Carribean
6) Kill Bill
7) Finding Nemo
8) Seabiscuit

I probably won't see American Splendor, Better Luck Tomorrow, or Lost in Translation until next year.
