ready action vs silent still spell

Hygric, I am sorry for no page number since I don't have the books here...

But it's right at the beginning of the magic chapter. Hmm.

I can't find anything in the magic chapter on this subject. You could be thinking of how the Spellcraft skill description says you need to be able to see the spells V or S components to identify a spell. Slightly different topic, though.

If the spell was silent and still how would the archer know he was casting?
For argument sake lets say he is casting mage armor to protect himself. He has not moved and/or said anything and the armor is invisible how does the archer know he has taken an action at all?
And even if the wizard "Zens out" (which I guess means closing eyes) it does not mean the archer gets his action.
That is why the Metamagic feats are so expensive for spell levels, but why they are so beneficial to the spellcaster.

Good eyesight.

Why not? There are very few limits on what you can use as a trigger for a ready action.

To counterspell any spell the person counterspelling would have to know that the person is casting, and then role a successful spellcraft check. The spellcraft skill states (PHB p74) "DC 15 + spell level - identify a spell being cast (you must see or hear the spells verbal or somatic components.) No retry."
So how could an archer with NO ranks in this Trained Only skill be able to identify a spell that has no verbal or somatic components?

Good eyesight.

And if you could state the rule you were using to assume that I would like to know where it is?

There's no rule, AFAIK, that says one way or another how to treat detecting spells that have metamagic feats applied to them. Rule it how you like.

Okay!

Sorry for not being specific. What is this archers good eyesight seeing if the wizard is casting a STILL AND SILENT SPELL!
So an archer just needs good eyesight to ID spells, but a wizards needs to make a spellcraft check @ DC 15 + the spells level to ID the spell.
Does that mean if your wizard comes across someone that is using a metamagic feat to adjust his spell he would need archer eyes to ID the spell and not the spellcraft skill?
